Lancelot Oduwa Imasuen, one of the most daring filmmakers in Nigeria and abroad has been nominated by the Benin Royal Monarch Omo N'Oba Erediauwa 1 as one of the illustrious recipients of his 2013 Oba Erediauwa Excellence Awards for his outstanding achievements in Nollywood and bringing national and international honours to his native Benin Kingdom, Nigeria and Africa.
The award giving ceremony will take place on the 28th of December at the Oba of Benin's palace during the celebration of the annual Benin Ugie Carnival held every December.

The Oba of Benin and Edo State government have already endorsed Lancelot Imasuen’s historical epic Invasion 1897 , the most anticipated film to celebrate the Nigeria Centenary in 2014 (modern day Nigeria came into being on January 1, 1914), and to mark the centenary of the death of the great King of Benin, Omon’Oba Ovonramwen Nogbaisi in exile in Calabar on January 14, 1914, Lancelot Imasuen will host special guests from corporate Nigeria and leading journalists at his Lagos studios on January 14, 2014.

The Oba Erediauwa Excellence Awards ceremony is one of the major events of the annual Benin Ugie Carnival when the Oba of Benin honours worthy sons and daughters of the Benin Kingdom.

The Ugieoba is a festival heralding good luck. It began in the era of Oba Ewuare the Great who reigned over the Benin Empire in the 15th century (1440 - 1473 AD). It is celebrated by the reigning Oba and Bini sons and daughters to mark the end of the Benin year, with prayers for peace and prosperity being offered for the coming year; it is a time of thanksgiving. This colourful festival which features the best of Benin life and culture is one of the rare occasions when the Oba dances in public.
The Ugie is a 14 day event of elaborate traditional and cultural activities, with participation from the different people that make up the Benin kingdom. It is a unique time and the only time in the year when the chiefs dress in their red regalia to dance the Ugie dance and pay homage to the Oba. It is also a period that features a rare appearance of the oba’s wives with their unique okuku hairdo.
