Reports from stadium operators in Brazil have revealed that the most expensive of the 12 stadiums built or renovated for the 2014 FIFA World Cup has a leaking roof, less than eight months after it was finished.

SECOPA, the local government agency that runs the Mane Garrincha National Stadium in Brasilia, will ask the company that rebuilt it to explain why parts of the roof let in rain during the women’s match between Brazil and Chile.

Local media reported that almost the entire lower ring of the stands was soaked. SECOPA however played down the problem, saying the leaks were not serious and would not affect any of the matches being played there during next year’s World Cup.

“Because it is a new, grandiose and complex stadium, some small points are still being corrected and tested but there is nothing that compromises the running of the stadium or the holding of events there,” SECOPA said in a statement.

The stadium comes with a five-year guarantee and any repair work will be paid for by the builders, SECOPA added.

The national stadium in the capital Brasilia cost more than 1.2 billion Real ($508.99 million). It will stage six World Cup matches including a quarter-final and the third-place playoff.

The venue was inaugurated in May and it hosted the opening match of the Confederations Cup between Brazil and Japan in June. It has held 17 major events since then, including several first division football matches, stadium officials said.

At least three of the six World Cup stadiums still to be finished before the tournament kicks off in June will be handed over behind schedule. A total of five people have died while working on the 12 venues, including one man in Brasilia.

Court stops construction at 2014 World Cup venue after workers die

Construction in a section of the World Cup stadium in Manaus where England will play Italy has been halted due to a court order after a worker fell 115ft to his death while working on the roof. Another worker died of a heart attack while paving an area outside the venue.

Marcleudo de Melo Ferreira, 22, died on Saturday after falling while helping install diamond shaped panels to the latticework of steel girders that form part of the stadium roof. Dozens of workers were balanced on the girders as they worked.

Work stopped after public prosecutors requested the immediate interruption of building in all areas where labourers need to be high above the ground. It will restart only after constructors show that safety measures are in place at the Arena Amazônia, which will also host United States against Portugal.

A court in Manaus said constructors will be fined a daily amount if they do not abide by the decision. A union said workers are expected to go on strike to complain about inadequate measures.

Prosecutors said there have been several reports of irregularities related to safety at the Arena Amazônia.

Two workers were killed when a crane collapsed on 27 November as it was hoisting a 500-ton piece of roofing at the São Paulo stadium that will host the World Cup opener. Last year a worker died at the construction site of the stadium in the nation's capital, Brasilia.

The Arena Amazônia is among the six World Cup stadiums that will not be completed by the end of the year as demanded by Fifa.

another example of corruption n waste started by fifa (insert sporting organisations) and birthed by the Brazilians in this case

grandiose white elephants everywhere to satisfy vanity project of football everywhere without thinking through the ramifications
Causing fans to traverse long distances

Now even platini wants to host an European Euros

In Greece.. stadia lie unused

In ZA, stadia have not been at full capacity since the world cup up till mandelas funeral

I pity Russia n Qatar

one may have loved to do Brazil but the mad distances and huge cost of accomodation in Rio have killed that appetite
Russia even has larger n colder terrain

England should have been given 2018.. superb transport links, well developed stadia, footie loving populace..

^^
Spot on! I find the stadium requirements a bit ridiiculous. A 30,000 seater arena will do just fine, instead of a 70,000 white elephant project.
