BARCLAYS PREMIER LEAGUE STAMFORD BRIDGE (ATT 41,614) 29TH DECEMBER 2013 - KICK OFF 16:00 CHELSEA 2 E HAZARD (17) S ETO'O (34) LIVERPOOL 1 M SKRTEL (3) Premier League: Chelsea see off Liverpool as Eto'o strikes killer blow By Chris Harvey. Last Updated: 29/12/13 10:01pm BEST OF THE MATCH Man of the match - Eden Hazard. The Belgian was at the heart of most of Chelsea's most incisive moves and was rewarded for a creative display with a superb goal. Goal of the match: Hazard's fabulous curling right- footer left Simon Mignolet in the Liverpool goal with no chance. Save of the match: Simon Mignolet may have been at fault for Samuel Eto'o's winner but he was at his very best to deny Belgian teammate Hazard early in the first half. Talking point 1: Should Liverpool have had at least one second half penalty after Luis Suarez went down under challenges from John Terry and Eto'o? Talking point 2: Were Chelsea lucky to finish with game with 11 men? Oscar appeared fortunate to escape with just a yellow card for flying into a two-footed challenge on fellow Brazilian Lucas Leiva during stoppage time. Your Comments (121) post a comment richard says 29/12/13 10:02pm Webb and big matches...IT WILL NEVER WORK...Oscar should've seen red, Terry should've seen red, at least pen. to Liverpool....3 huge mistakes by Howie...that influence the game. the man hasn't changed a bit since ruining the WorldCup final in 2010... 231 72 Reply will-goon says 29/12/13 9:49pm Why all the negativity from so many Liverpool fans? Your manager and team are doing an excellent job. You had the absolute Christmas from Hell and you fought gallantly. You should be proud of your team's achievements so far this season. You've done the hard part already. Now you have Man City, Arsenal, $helsea, Everton, Tottenham [5-0] Hotspurs all to come to Anfield. Get behind your team because they deserve it and keep Man Utd out of the top 4. simples. Cheer up me lads n' lasses. 40 187 Reply timmilfc says 29/12/13 9:21pm ok fenway sports, this is it in a nut shell, now we have to buy big in January to keep up with the big boys. Simple as that !! 2 world class signings. If not, 6th at best. Its in your hands now!! 58 31 Reply carl-t says 29/12/13 9:00pm lets all be honest we lost away to Man City , but unlike Arsenal, Man Utd and no dout City will beat Chelsea, we never got battered ( lost by 1 goal), We lost away to Arsenal but didn't get battered, we lost Away to Chelsea ( lost by 1 goal ) but never got battered, we won away at Spurs , and Everton couldn't beat us at goodison, so I don't think we have done badly at probably the hardest 5 away games we will face and we have had some bad referee mistakes along the way 130 74 Reply craig says 29/12/13 8:57pm If you want to talk about penalties not being given, you should concentrate on Skrtel. He's consistently committing numerous penalty offences through holding in every game, yet he hasn't been penalised once. 48 238 Reply richard says 29/12/13 8:56pm From a lfc fan well done Chelsea good 1st half display and typical Chelsea shut out in the 2nd. On a lfc point of view I am still pleased being 5th and only 6 points off top after playing Arsenal, City, Chelsea, spuds, Newcastle and Everton all away. A good run now and we have a real chance of top 4. Not a bad 2013 in all well done Brendan and the lads. 13 201 Reply tony-lfc says 29/12/13 8:32pm Our bench is too weak. Brenden shouldn't complain about the depth of our squad, look at what he brought in; Allen, Aspas & Alberto, Borino & Asaidi they are not good enough for the premiership or for the future. We need quality now to challenge for a top four spot 28 41 Reply therealred says 29/12/13 8:28pm i'm not going to comment on possible penalties or fouls. just that i expected us to lose these two games. now it can only get better, besides all the top clubs have to still come to anfield and who knows, maybe the gods will cut us some slack. 6 43 Reply ahmed says 29/12/13 8:26pm As a Liverpool fan, the biggest positive I take from losing the past 2 games was that they were actually played during the busy Christmas period in succession. If we had to play two easy(" must win " games instead we could have dropped point due to tiredness and that will have hurt even more, because there is every chance that we would have lost against City&Chelsea away anyway, so now lets focus on a good run and climb up the table once more. still a long way. 20 99 Reply paulius says 29/12/13 8:25pm I'm very happy with Chelsea victory! 20 79 Reply david-s says 29/12/13 8:24pm Suarez - should have been booked for diving ! 156 151 Reply dan says 29/12/13 9:04pm Suarez's reputation goes before him!!! tylar says 29/12/13 8:48pm and what for eto'o then!!! valestas says 29/12/13 8:20pm Well done Chelsea.Keep it up! 60 122 Reply george says 29/12/13 8:18pm Chelsea Deserved to Win today and taking out the Poor Referee Decisions that could have gone for either Team today, who created the more chances, controlled the Game and Scored the Most Goals? Chelsea 69 157 Reply adam says 29/12/13 8:15pm Suarez didn't get sent off last season when he bit someone so i don't see how Liverpool fans can complain too much 76 170 Reply marc says 29/12/13 9:09pm I'm an avid Liverpool fan and I will say that I totally agree with you. I thought playing Luiz in the middle today won Chelsea the game. Liverpool need a proper power house midlielder to boss games and teams like this, another SG would be very useful! Other than that a credible performance. Sterling was awesome. tylar says 29/12/13 8:14pm As a lfc fan it pains me to watch my team in two tough away games which we both played well in and get nothing from any of the fixtures.i know sometimes its just football, but we have been let down again by the referee officials in both games Im not taking anything away from city and Chelsea but we have had some very wrong decisions go against us lately and im hoping at the end of the season they will not cost us in are hunt for top 4 success.going back to liiverpool matters lads of lfc you have done brilliant job for how thin are squad is at the moment and im confident you can fire us back into champions league next season with a little of reinforcement hopefully in January.ynwa!!!. 44 62 Reply declan says 29/12/13 8:07pm Looking at our xmas fixtures, 6/12 points isn't bad at all considering we were away to Chelsea, City & Spurs. Had a few decisions gone our way we could have beaten City and had a point against Chelsea. 3 wins from 3 before the Merseyside derby are vital if we are going to continue to challenge for Champs League. Don't think we played our best today. Allen was again ineffective (despite doing the simple stuff right), Johnson was dreadful (would like to see Kelly or Flano have a go at RB) and Sakho never looks comfortable on the ball (I think he is a decent defender though). Unfortunately our squad just isn't strong enough so hopefully we can get some new faces in during the transfer window. Stevie, Sturridge and Enrique coming back should inject some more life into our team which unsurprisingly is looking a bit tired after the Xmas break! YNWA 28 45 Reply redblooded says 29/12/13 8:07pm Chelsea deserved the win. Liverpool's defensive frailties and lack of squad depth was exposed again by a top 4 side. Missing Stevie G badly. Glen Johnson is having his worst season made worse by the injury to Enrique. Don't understand the Smith decision! Let's refocus on the top 4 starting with our next game. A foolish decision. tejveer says 29/12/13 8:01pm Why all the panic? At one point Arsenal were 5-7points ahead of us for league and we clawed it back. 7 of the top 8teams we have played away... So let's see how they do when they come to Anfield. Chelsea played well and deserved three points. We didn't create enough scoring opportunities today and against the big teams Suarez needs a little more support. The first touch and passing let LFC down today. Anyway, let's put a run together and wins some matches we shall what happens come end of the season. Top 4 is what we want, but not to be rude some fans saw us on top of the league and got greedy, raised expectations and now are disappointed we aren't firmly in the title race. 9 89 Reply kurt says 29/12/13 7:52pm wow!!!people on here going on about suarez never scoring against big teams...just need to look back at is history he as scored against chelsea man u arsenal spurs man city,so people slating him need to get the facts right.anyways 19 in 14 games isn t bad for some1 who might not be world class is it now. 25 93 Reply dave says 29/12/13 8:33pm that's Liverpool fans problem, always history and never the future, you have to look forward to go forward. did he score today NO jack says 29/12/13 7:47pm United only 2 Points behind Liverpool now. Starting to catch up with the supposedly top 4 teams.Theres gonna be points dropped and points gained. 43 52 Reply Post Comment First Name Last Name Your Email Display name Your Comments Submit comments Matches Sun 29th Dec Everton 2 - 1 Southampto FT Newcastle 0 - 1 Arsenal FT Chelsea 2 - 1 Liverpool FT Tottenham 3 - 0 Stoke City FT Full Premier League Calendar Table Pos Team P Pts 1 Arsenal 19 42 2 Manchester City 19 41 3 Chelsea 19 40 4 Everton 19 37 5 Liverpool 19 36 6 Manchester United 19 34 7 Tottenham Hotspur 19 34 8 Newcastle United 19 33 9 Southampton 19 27 10 Hull City 19 23 11 Swansea City 19 21 12 Stoke City 19 21 13 Aston Villa 19 20 14 Norwich City 19 19 15 West Bromwich Albion 19 18 16 Cardiff City 19 18 17 Crystal Palace 19 16 18 Fulham 19 16 19 West Ham United 19 15 20 Sunderland 19 14 Related Jose: book Suarez for 'dive' Rodgers: Defence let us down Chelsea come from behind to beat Liverpool Jose impressed by Rodgers Cech seeks Liverpool shutout Jose: Ivanovic has moved on Rodgers hails Jose influence Jose: Reds can be champs Grant expects clash of styles Ivanovic relishing Reds test What went wrong?
