Why The Discrimination Against Dark-skinned Girls In The Music Industry?

In the Nigeria music industry, I've discovered that most artiste prefer using light-skinned (african girls) compared to dark-skinned (african girls) in their music videos which we see everyday on tv. No doubt, light-skinned models are beautiful, moreso dark-skinned models, and even better, but often times we rarely see dark-skinned ladies being used to shoot music videos, probably as a result of stereotype regarding their skin colour. However, when some dark-skinned models are used for music videos, it's either they're 'waka-pass' or a great dancer who was relegated to a position where the camera could barely capture them. Whereas, the light-skinned girls are always taking the leading role or main characters in these videos, even when they have nothing gigantic to shake or flaunt, except just smiling and displaying their faces with a sexy look.

This discrimination is fast spreading and somehow it has found its way into Noolywood. The funny part is that majority of these artiste/producers are dark-skinned themselves with sisters of the same skin colour. Now, how would they feel if there sister was denied a job, simply because of her skin colour, only to realise that the person who later got the role was a light-skinned lady who wasen't half-as-talented as the dark-skinned lady.

In the united states, african-americans always complain about being marginalized but majority of black-american artiste use white-women in the videos. Who is fooling who? Are they trying to say black girls ain't sexy enough and if 'black is beautiful' then black people must ensure that they promote the message through music, not until then will I stop seeing them as semi-hypocrite.

The showbiz presentation on camera is designed to capture people's attention at the least possible time. It happens that cameras do not capture black skin skin so lusciously as the light skin. Hence the preference.

Remember the essence remains to get attention fast and hold that attention for as long as possible.

Music videos works in a kindof rapid succession but it doesn't stop the director from capturing a dark-skinned model for atleast 10seconds. Wizkid had used light-skinned ladies in practically all his videos right from 'holla at your boy' and recently 'Caro'. Davido did same with 'Ekuro'. May D also did the same thing with 'Gat me high'. The only Nigerian artiste that normally uses dark-skinned girls in his videos is, 2face idibia, and that's because he knows what true beauty is all about. This is a link when Wizkid and Akon rejected dark-skinned models for shooting a new music video in Ghana. https://www.nairaland.com/1522567/wizkid-akon-reject-darkskinned-models

Like Itbomb said the camera gives a more. better look to light skin. Also Dark skin requires extra lighting which in most cases spoil the set's look.

PS: This will make many to resort to bleaching.sad

@OP: There's no discrimination. They're only doing what appeals to majority of the public on TV.

You can't blame Wizkid or some superstar selecting whom he thinks will boost his video with beauty and grace. Music videos are very expensive to make these days and you can hardly base your decisions on sentiments. Moreover, we have dark-skinned female superstars [even better than being a video vixen] such as Tiwa Savage, Chidinma who many consider to be devastatingly beautiful. It's a matter of taste.
