Police are considering investigating Channel 4 documentary Benefits Street after the programme featured a thief showing how to shoplift.
Benefits Street documents the lives of locals living on James Turner Street in the run-down Winson Green area of Birmingham.
A straw poll revealed 90 per cent of residents living in the 137-house street claim one or more benefits ranging from £500-£900 a month in free handouts.
But following Monday night's programme, which showed a prolific shoplifter explaining how to dodge security alarms and how to remove security tags from clothes without causing damage, more than 200 complaints were made to Channel 4.
Superintendent Danny Long, of West Midlands Police, said: "We have been inundated with comments from members of the public, many of whom are concerned about elements of the show which showed criminal activity.
