100 Nigerian Immigrants Die Off Spanish Coast

Another disaster has befallen Nigerian migrants seeking greener pastures in Europe as about 100 of them were reportedly killed while attempting to cross the dangerous sea into Spain.

Spanish authorities said several died from hunger, thirst, exposure to the elements, while others were pushed overboard by boat operators fleeing from coast guards.

The Red Cross and Red Crescent agencies said, however, that rescue officials saved about 25 survivors, off the coast of southern Spanish Almeria Province.

They included five women and five children.

The identities of the deceased have not been established, but sources said they listed their nationality as Nigerians.

A Red Cross official said five of the victims came from Lagos State.

Three others came from Imo, six from Ogun and 10 from Anambra State.

The source said security forces and Naval patrol between Malaga and Melilla waters rescued the migrants from a half-submerged boat.

Every year, tens of thousands of Africans try to enter Spain by boat, to find work in Europe. "We can never know the exact number," a Red Cross employee at the port of Malaga said.

The Red Cross representative said one woman lost her husband and three small children at sea.

"She was in shock and great anguish," the representative added.

A total of 921 migrants died in 2007 from exposure or accidents, as they made the journey by sea to Spain, according to a Spanish NGO, the Organisation for Human Rights in Andalusia.
