I am a computer literate graduate of Agric Engineering but want to develop myself in the field of IT for self-reliance and more job options. Could anyone in the house please help me with the needed details including the cost of the training and where. I work in Benin for now. God bless.

I want to believe that you are aware that IT field is a very volatile one. You have to sit down and ask yourself 'which area do interests me most?' the one you do with a great passion is the possible direction. I read Geology from UI but today, I'm fully into IT and I've passed through about 3 depts. of IT. Right now, I'm a web developer and I'm catching serious fun. The internet avails you the opportunity to get yourself trained if you are self-motivated enough like me. Decide wisely depending on your drive, and I assure you of a great future ahead as everything in the world can't do without IT.

Hello Ibukunjah,

Right now the most challeging and demanding career in the Information Technology world is the Networking aspect, as it is very appreciated in all perspective of I.T. Well, I am an undergraduate student studying Electronic and Computer Engineering, in which I will like to major in Telecommunications.

Well, in brief I will recommend you go into Networking because, it is highly skillful and demanded in the I.T market globally.

Take care.

nicely said, check inside you, i believe we have the Hardware software as two major brances in IT
hardware may be broken into Networking, system maintainance, , software would cover programming, webdevelopment, system configurations and nework configs. these are still very broad, so make a choice. I am into networking, hardware and i do alot of configs like exchange server, windows server, wireless configuration, vsat just to name a few.Its all a mater of interest and choice.
and for you

Thanks guys for your replies. But what difference does it make if one is skilled in his field of interest but does not have the professional certificate? Can he still smile to the bank?

Well, just like any other profession, you can touch the sky if you can dare it very well. Let me state this categorically, money can not stop you! Whatever you do, if you are really passionate about it, you will always soar, it is just a matter of time.

Smiling to the bank is a matter of your attitude and perception, corporate cleaning services was initiated by someone and many people are earning in millions annually from it today. The self motivation thing I meant is your ability to think for yourself and not someone else thinking for you.

NO !!!

Why ?

There is going to be thousands of other I.T guys like you when you go to any interview involving a potential job offer. You might see just a particular individual holding like 8 certifications e.g CCNA, OCP, A+, Comptia, MCSE, CWNA, JAVA, SUN SOLARIS etc. These are all certifications that any serious I.T professional must have, atleast 1 or preferrably 2. Also, your I.T training institute matters a lot. Training at places like NIIT, APTECH, Informatics Institute etc will be giving more attention than training at your local computer training centre where no one has ever heard of it outside the state before. I am talking based on a scenario where you intend working in a big multi-national or any big company with an I.T budget that runs into millions. In Nigeria, thats the kind of working place where you can be rest assured you will be smiling all the way to the bank. Working experience in I.T is also a major factor. No company worth its salt will give you a major sys admin position when you are just fresh out of an I.T training centre. Its like giving a young pilot a passenger plane to fly all by himself on his own, on his day of finishing flight school. He might not crash the plane but he can potentially cause a lot of damage which can mean millions of naira in downtime to that comapany. So, certification is very important in your chosen field of I.T. Now imagine going there with only your B.sc and standing there like a fool amongst those type of people.

All those that have spoken av all spoken well but my own contribution is that ,u just try to examine urself , that is what kind of person are u??, do u love to stay in-door most times or u like moving around because this will really tell alot on u, so that u will enjoy what u are doing and not just doing it for money sake, IT profession can broken down into 2 divisions, we have the hardware or software professionals, the software professionals are those who love to stay indoors and do alot, alot, alot of thinking and reasoning, while the hardware professionals are those whose jobs are mainly on repairs, maintainance and networking, these set of people don't sit in offices for too long ,they are always on-site i.e outdoor, myself for instance in my school ,my department is Computer Science and Engineering, but i love to stay indoors ,do alot reasoning,so that y i choosed computer science and not only that also diving into Software Engineering in an I.T school in Lagos, so my guy , think twice before u choose either hardware or software aspect.I in case u want to contact for further advice my mail is seun2talk@yahoo.com, My number is 07030289454.Wishing u all the best, I also want to say hi all the greatest LADOKITES,

The average of the most BIG COMPANIES as well as SMALL COMPANIES prefer to hire someone with one or two professional IT certificates, one or two bachelor degrees and at least 3-5 years IT experiences and proficient skills.

Some of them (companies) will not accept someone with multiple certificates, multiple college degrees and no skills/experiences that lead to their skeptical of this type of person's qualifications in order to force this person taking the programming aptitude exams to show their proof skills/knowledge of IT due to their BAD EXPERIENCES firing someone else that lack similar experiences like that.

Some companies are VERY RARELY to accept person who has no professional certificates but EXCELLENT PROFICIENT SKILLS/WORKING EXPERIENCES because of individual knows how to find the right button convincing the job interviewer to melt their heart/mind knowing the answering the interviewer question: WHY SHOULD THE COMPANY HIRE THIS PERSON FOR THIS JOB? That is very exceptional opportunity to the interviewer of the IT companies.

EVERY COMPANIES are varied acceptance to hire IT person difference---not the same!!!

Important keys to impress COMPANIES in order to land your dream job QUICKLY are:
[li]one or two bachelor degree, some can accept vocational/trade certification that is equivalent to 2 or 4 years college[/li]
[li]1 or 2 professional certificates[/li]
[li]3-5 working experiences[/li]
[li]excellent skills/knowledge/proficient IT[/li]
Good luck!
