ENGINEERING COURSE NOW ADDED TO LISTS OF COURSES IN UNIABUJA The National Universities Commission (NUC) on Tuesday announced the accreditation of Medicine, Veterinary Medicine, and Agriculture. The commission also announced the approval for Engineering courses for the University of Abuja. The Chairman of the Task Team on the accreditation of the College of Medicine and Visiting Professor to NUC, Eugene Okpere, made this known when the team for the accreditation of the four courses that were suspended did a tour of facilities at the university. Mr. Okpere said that with the full accreditation for medical and agricultural courses and interim accreditation for veterinary medicine, all was now set for the take-off of the programme. Explaining the status of engineering, the don said even though the programme had been in existence for several years, it had only just been approved by the NUC and should now start the process of gaining accreditation. He said NUC was now convinced that the university had the capacity to run the courses. “We are happy to say that University of Abuja is more than ready to run these courses and the facilities we see here are even superior to those in other teaching hospitals,” he said. The Minister of Education, Professor Ruqayyatu Rufa’i, had in April 2012 announced the suspension of the four courses after the Needs Assessment (the panel set up to assess needs of universities) visited the university. Students of the university, led by the Engineering students, had protested the non-accreditation of courses in the university leading to violence and closure of the institution for several months. When the school was eventually re- opened, the Engineering students were transferred to other nearby public universities. The vice chancellor of the university, Prof. James Adelabu, said management had to put in place all the necessary facilities for accreditation with the full cooperation of NUC because it became a subject of national importance. prof. Adelabu said that aside gaining accreditation, the university was also working with professional bodies, adding that the Medical and Dental Council of Nigeria had visited the university for verification, and expressed satisfaction with what was on ground. Explaining the fate of engineering students transferred to other universities,The outgoing vc prof. james Adelabu said some of them had yet to resume academic work due to time difference in sessions. “Those that have not been accepted in those universities will come back to University of Abuja and we will see what courses they can fit into. “The journey to get to where we are today has not been easy, but we thank God that all is now over,” the VC said. |

HOW PROF. MICHEAL ADIKWU EMERGED VC OF UNIABUJA Pro -Chancellor and Chairman, Governing Council of the University of Abuja, Samuel Ogbemudia , has explained how the current Vice Chancellor of the University , Professor Michael Adikwu , emerged. Ogbemudia said it took a painstaking process for the Council of the University at its 36 th extra - ordinary meeting held on Monday, June 30, 2014 before the emergence of Adikwu . He explained that an unprecedented 123 eminent professors applied for the plum job from within and outside the university and outside the country . He said the initial 123 applicants were pruned to 21 and subsequently cut to 10 before the final three from which Adikwu was picked. The Pro - Chancellor gave this explanation in a statement signed by Professor Anthony Adegbulugbe on his authorisation on Wednesday in Abuja. He said Adikwu ’ s appointment conforms with ( Miscellaneous Provisions ( Amendment ) Act , 2003 , which empowers the Council to choose one of the three candidates forwarded to it by joint Council and Senate Selection Board, to appoint the candidate so chosen and notify the visitor (President ) , all these steps were duly accomplished . The Pro - Chancellor however urged the new Vice Chancellor to hit the ground running to enable him tackle all the existing administrative issues confronting the university. He also tasked members of the university’ s academic including the students to rally round the new VC and the leadership of the university in the greater interest of university’ s development. Adikwu who is 50 years old was a lecturer in University of Nigeria, Nsukka ( UNN ) prior to his appointment by the Governing Board of the University on June 30 . Via daily independent |

UNIABUJA SUSPENDS STRIKE The Chairman, Academic Staff Union of Universities, University of Abuja branch, Mr Ben Ugheoke, on Tuesday in Abuja said the body has suspended the strike by its members. Ugheoke told the News Agency of Nigeria in a telephone interview that the decision was taken on Monday during a congress held at the institution’s mini-campus. He said, “We resolved at the congress to suspend the strike after signing an agreement with the Vice-Chancellor, Prof. Micheal Adikwu. “The announcement on this will be done Tuesday morning.” The ASUU branch embarked on the strike on June 2, following what it called “Federal Government’s refusal to release the White Paper containing issues affecting the institution”. The Federal Government had on July 16, 2012 constituted a Visitation Panel to resolve issues affecting the institution but the White Paper of the report was yet to be released. Ugheoke said the signed agreement involved the release of the White Paper, and that the Vice-Chancellor has assured the union that he would work towards ensuring its release. He, however, said the recall of students to the campus was a decision to be made by the University Senate. Link : http://www.punchng.com/news/uniabuja-lecturers-suspend-strike Source : The Punch.
