A new research at the MIT Media lab has lead to the development of a giant ring shaped device; FingerReader. It is designed to effectively read books to visually impaired people.

The device has to be worn by a user who has challenges with her vision. The user indexes her finger below a printed text. Thereafter, a small camera lens scans the words, which are immediately interpreted in the device and then, the device reads aloud the text in real time.

A user is alerted with Audio cues and a small vibrating motor, just in case she slew from a line of text or needs to move to the next line.

“It’s a lot more flexible, a lot more immediate than any solution that they have right now.” MIT’s Pattie Maes said in a statement.

FingerReader has proved to be one of the best solutions for reading to people having visual difficulties. It works with a simple and familiar gesture of the finger. This offers real-time feedback on the progression of a scan.

285 million people are visually impaired, and of them, 39 million are blind, says the World Health Organization. Numbers like these shows there is a need to offer a solution to millions of persons with visual difficulty. FinderReader will hope to be the bridge the gap, however.

The team of researchers are yet to slam on price tag on the device, but they believe, it could be affordable when it finally leaves its current prototype stage.

Everything you need to know about FingerReader can be found here [pdf], and we also have a video showing how this device works.
