Can somebody please explain why it is like this, especially when Nairaland (in my own opinion) is more valuable than Facebook for Nigerians? I dont seem to understand. Does NairaLand need to work on Marketing skills?

You can use Nairaland without login but not with Facebook. Unregistered members of Nairaland might be bigger than registered members

I think its because Facebook connects people with the world, while NairaLand connects people with only Nigerians.

Interesting, so NairaLand needs 2 work on their marketing skills, will you say that is the case?

naijatechworld: I think its because Facebook connects people with the world, while NairaLand connects people with only Nigerians.

Yeah I can see this happening. But what ads, aren't ads suppose 2 connect people with the outside world?

Yeah I see your point. So most come just to browse or lurk, not to give inputs.

The joy of nairaland is being able to pokenose in wetin nor consign u. But everyone is on facebook, even people in their 60s and 70s, younger siblings or children open facebook accounts for their older siblings or parents. Some even have fb acc for their newborn baby.

I believe Nairaland was created for a good course but some people turned it into a messy dungeon. With the kind of diatribe against each other here, how many responsible Nigerians would love to join or even contribute.
We just show the world from here that we are a bunch of ill-mannered losers.
Let's portray a scintillating atmosphere here then watch people flock in here.

So Facebook is more personal while Nairaland is more social. What if Nairaland became more of a social network than an internet forum?

But thats everywhere Cherez. No matter how much good you have intended on making a product, some people will always use it for their negative means.

Nairaland doesn't have 1.2m users. Some peeps have 200 monikers (like dhtml, lol). And people who haven't logged in since 2006 still have their accounts listed among the 1.2m users. Same goes for facebook's 1billion users.

Facebook: a pix is worth a million words.
Nairaland= read only
facebook = clothed in bright colors (white=brightness,blue=cool)
nL = sober tame colors

facebook = an identity card for netizens
nL = anonymous party

facebook=fosters connection , relationships
,includg makg new ones.
NL = fosters readg and postg.
Instant connection not possible.

Facebook= always innovatg
nL = slow to innovate ,if at all.
(no nL app 4 all platforms, no
acquisitions and diversifcations etc).

Yeah NL really needs 2 step up their game. I believe that if NL was to be a social network with better features than Facebook, it will win.

NL lacks marketing,if u're not so internet-active u'll hardly know it exists...BTW Oga Seun is too stingy,spending a lil on publicity won't hurt a fly,perhaps he thinks 1.2M is enough??

A lot of people don't think it's worth their time to register and even more don't know it exists.

#Trying to remember how I found NL & why I registered...

Yeah, I remember why I registered, but as for the other question....

You guys are comparing "apples and oranges". Nairaland and facebook have little in common. They are absolutely different kinds of applications, for absolutely different purposes.

Nairaland is a web forum, where viewing of content in the threads is open to everybody and contribution/sharing of content is open to all registered users.

facebook on the other hand is strictly a social network. Contribution/sharing of content is based on connection between registered users as a minimum requirement.

seun is not stingy,*my opinion*,
nairaland cannot market like konga,dealdey,etc without som serious capital injection from an investor/investment body.
Stackoverflow got popular and received investmnt fundg to expand. Now its a full fledged company. Mayb seun aint seeing such interest, but if Nl were on good soil ,i tell you ,it wud b in class of reddit,digg,stumbleupon,
etc. Not fb ,cuz nl is discussion,fb is showya face. With its own ubiquitious icon.
What NL needs is an innovative ambitious ceo to expand its scope.
Its runng far below its capacity.
Far below.
NL shud have its corporate offce,
bcome more structured -like linkedin.
Thts if it wants to operate highkey. Else, it can operate low key like hacker news..
(no ads,no icon,no anythg but posters are usually specialists) . The option abt direction lies with seun.

Let me explain wia d word "stingy" sets in...NL can't grow higher dan dis drainage hole if only one man keeps runnin it,gettin an office nd hiring a couple workers won't be a bad idea,in business u av to expand if u wanna get expanded...also marketing can take several means,Naijaloaded for instance wic is not even as big as NL,I've been seeing dia name on minimal musical concert banners nd red carpets,sponsoring a couple small shows will make advertisers run in here..Hw mch will dat cost?? Re ppl not paying 4 ads??...NL is just too good nd I pray it gets bigger...I bet with better strategies,NL will surely expand nd reach other African countries... cc SEUN

Mr. Seun Osewa, I really pray and hope that you are looking at this thread sir. I really believe that you can be the Mr. Zuckerberg of Africa that we can all look up to and point to like a hero. Just please continue to do your best and leave God the rest. I really want to see you and others who have made meaninful apps in Africa make it, than others wasting our time. But understand sir, please understand Mr. Seun that competition is everywhere. Please never slack. Always step up your game. I think that by now, you should be on Forbes' list of Millionaires, if not Billionaires.

any1 can sell ads but not every1 can strt and create d most popular nigerian website and make a decent living doing so.
Takes an enterpreneurial mind to do tht.

An enterprenuer is a person who can turn opportunity into profit.

An entrepreneur is someone who initiates and finances a business. Initiating and financing a business doesn't make you a business man. Business man in this context doesnt mean business man.

You can't compare nairaland and facebook, instead compare it with a site like Topix

Personally I think that NairaLand is way bigger than Facebook + Topix. Or how do u feel? NairaLand = CraigsList + Google + Facebook + Twitter. By now, NairaLand should be a billion dollar startup. I just feel as if certain things need to be implemented in the startup as well as the management needs to be more competitive.
