Oh, I missed your questions. Glad and grateful to have them back. Holiday is great and for the most part it's already over. Enjoyed it working indoors. Haven't gone out today sef. Told my lord just now that I'm tired of the house. We'll shower and take a stroll.
I do not take a class per se so I do not write/prepare lessons notes. What we (my lord and I) write/design are worksheets. It's more like a textbook when put together with over 150 pages. We try to pick each topic for each class and give numerous exercises after a brief explanation. The difference with what's obtainable in the market is that we divide the workbooks into terms and the three terms into ten weeks each. This makes monitoring a child's progress very easy. Another addition is we've added objective questions. We have written and compiled the four pre-primary classes together in a book each for Maths and English. Presently we're working on the primary classes. I'm not sure if my explanation makes any sense. I could actually send you a sample if you don't mind. Only of course you would give me some time since I'm not always online with the PC to access my mail. Btw...I'll be eagerly waiting for the next question. How's your car search going?

Lol. Thanks for asking. The car search is still on course. Seen two sellers and will be meeting them tomorrow.

Firstly, let me take it slow and not get confused.

Do you have nursery and primary or just nursery and this time, you decided to go into primary?

What's your staff strength too and how involved are both you and your lord?

We are very involved. That's our primary place of assignment. We have 18 staff members. We have nursery and primary.

This is clearer.

Now since you don't write lesson notes, but prepare workbooks or worksheets, do you staff prepare any? Especially for the primary section?

Of course they do or how else do they show their readiness for the week. All teachers prepare and submit lesson plans and notes weekly. Our worksheets/workbooks only tests the quality of work the teacher does. It also serves as a guide to the teacher and gives the scope of each lesson.

Good morning.

I trust you and your family slept in peace.

So since your teachers prepare lesson plans and notes on a weekly basis, I think it reduces productivity and efficiency. These notes are produced weekly and termly and repeated next session. I've taught before so I think it is a redundant practice.

I suggest that a standard template be developed and be modified base on new developments maybe yearly or every two years. The notes should be compiled and issued to the teachers.

This will give teachers ample time to bring in creative ideas in enhancing education.

True, it could be redundant. But no matter how monotonous it always helps teachers brush up and prepare for the day's lesson. Many persons want to be spoon fed and would add little or nothing to an already prepared material. Remember too that we do not prepare worksheets for other subjects only Maths and English. In addition this is our first attempt at making worksheets for the primary classes. So it's not like we've already done them before that's why the work is on going. After this session we'll compile it into a book and instead of writing we'll only be making one or two revision. Our goal is to have a structure on ground where the pupils' performance is not teacher dependent but largely material dependent.

Let me explain some things. Our teachers prepare plans/notes for all subjects they teach. I do the marking myself. You'll be surprsed how many write and spell very incorrectly despite their qualifications not to talk about grammar construction. Secondly, a teacher might be absent for a reason or two. It is his/her lesson notes another teacher uses to teach that class during his/her absence. For these two reasons among others we've decided to retain the practise of writing weekly plans/notes. Yes it could be stressful. I've taught in a number of schools myself but it's all part of the package. How does a lazy teacher train pupils to be hardworking? Moreover it's a primary school and we do not permit teachers to write notes on the board directly from the textbooks. They're to sieve the relevant information using more than one text and put them in their plans. These plans are submitted every Friday ie for the coming week. Now, our input is this. For every topic in Math and English after marking your plan for the week, we give you worksheets containing exercises basically which the pupils are to solve/answer after your explanation/teaching. We noticed that in these two subjects despite giving the teachers the curriculum containing the topic and its contents many of them prepare very shallow notes and give exercises that are too simple. Once in a while we come across sound and innovative teachers only challenge is many persons do not work well without constant supervision. Many want to do what's convenient whether it's best for the pupils or not.

I see your point and like my experience with teaching, I see their point too.

You are trying to teach both students and teachers. That's good. However, complaining about the quality of these teachers is really not a good idea. I think what you pay attract the kind of teachers you employ. Also, your values too attract those who will apply to work in your school. I believe that if you have a solid recruitment programme, you will be able to retain quality teachers.

Then again, if you have noticed, the contents in text books are being shrinked every now and then. So teachers are having less and less of what to put into their notes. So I was thinking why not have a standard template and give teachers more time and space to come up with something creative, to add to what is being taught in classes. By creative ideas I mean allowing teachers to design and develop an all-inclusive class exercise. More group works. More word problems and even introduce them to 'case studies'. Introduce them to the concept of 'team work'. Motivate teachers to draw up a plan that will reduce the distance between what is taught and reality which will in turn make students appreciate education and see the benefits.

Let me give you an instance. When I was a teacher, I had serious problem teaching kids basic statistics and information. I gave them assignments, which was like a work-exercise. I told them to go to the market to count the number of fruits and different types of fruit and their prices. I asked them to record it and do something like a chart. Then when they resume the next day or working day, I ask them to make inference from what they've been able to gather. I felt this was an exercise that is self-inclusive. As they do it, they appreciate what is beneath that topic.

Things like this, I believe are what teachers should spend their time developing and not copying notes (verbatim too) term-in term-out. Because, at primary level, nothing actually changes. What I learnt in Primary School is basically the same thing that is being taught today.

okay, Let me see if I got you.

We do not give lesson notes to teachers to copy to form their lesson plans. The worksheets we prepare are exercises for the children to buttress and assess the teacher's lesson. These worksheets are given to each child to solve weekly based on the topic they've been taught.

Yes, we teach staff and they in turn teach the pupils.

About our package, it is proportional to our fees. At the moment, no staff collects less than what a child pays as tuition fee. Some collect as much as double or triple of our tuition fees. Based on our population and pupil to teacher ratio, the tuition fee is barely carrying the staff salary. We try to consider the environment and calibre of parents we have so increasing our fees rapidly and immediately isn't on our minds for now. We see this time as sowing time and we're glad to invest. Pay time is coming when we'll comfortably charge parents and hire worthy staff. In the mean time, we're content to make progress steadily albeit slowly.

Forgive me, I didn't intend to complain about staff quality. I simply tried to explain our response to the deficiencies we've observed and why we make worksheets. We hold regular seminars on many areas and the staff improvement is encouraging.

About having templates, the lesson plan has a format. The teacher is to write out creative points under each heading. We do not give the teachers notes/plans to copy. They are not in possession of the last lesson plan/note because it is school property.

Your illustration on your statistics adventure is very relevant. Our staff do such out of the box projects and assignments with their pupils without any restriction or interference from us. In fact such activities are encouraged. We hardly suggest such for them. The staff decide on the teaching aids to use and the method of presentation. We only go through to ensure nothing is amiss.

About team work, our teachers are in pairs. We only have three classes with a single teacher all others have two teachers each even though no class is up to 30pupils. Aside that we meet every Friday after school to discuss challenges and their solutions.

Most importantly as you rightly said we'll add more emphasis on creativity, innovation and team work.

Hi HFOG....

Please forgive me for replying this late. I was caught up with somethings which am not obliged to mention here....you know nauu cheesy cheesy

So,

I like the way you guys are running the school. I also appreciate the fact that you've cleared the issue of staff pay as it regards to teaching quality and the various structures and strategies required for quality learning.

I was only harping on preparation of lesson notes. I understand now that you have a template where every teacher is expected to use. Lesson plans are different from lesson notes. Lesson note from my understanding entails you forming a note from academic resources such as from a textbook (not a note book). I see this as a redundant exercise and rather suggest the idea of spending more time preparing creative programs for the kids. This is my point. I see that your teachers already create these programs for the kids but devoting more time to it, I think is the best while the lesson notes developed from academic resources can be compiled by the school and given to these teachers. It is not a textbook nor worksheet that can be sold but as a standard note book just that it is type written and well packaged.
