"Right now, I think it's safe to say there isn't a next instalment."

Jon Cassar - exec producer on 24 - has got to be yanking our chain though, right?

Returning to our screens after a four-year absence, Fox's escapist action thriller has been warmly welcome back by critics, while audience numbers in the US have also been strong for a summer show - with the Live Another Day finale pulling in 6.5m viewers.
An official re-commission now feels like a formality - perhaps with both Cassar and Kiefer Sutherland attending this year's San Diego Comic Con, news of a renewal will break (rather fittingly) on July 24?

When (not if) 24 returns again, here's six things the next season must deliver. (One might be a joke. Possibly.)

1. Stick to the mini-series format

"Shouldn't it be called 12?" asked smart-arses the world over when it was announced that Live Another Day's episode-count would be just half of what 24 fans were used to.

But cutting back on Bauer was the smartest thing Fox and the show's creative team could have done. While classic 24 would lag in pace, tension and quality as it struggled to maintain a single plot across a six-month period, this was the old show without the boring bits.

If 24 returns, sticking to the mini-series format seems like the smartest move - it's not only less of a behemoth logistically but it benefits the show creatively too. Win win.

2. Keep Jack out of Los Angeles

Having deposited Jack in the glamorous surroundings of Sarf East London this year, let's hope that the 24 team aren't planning on returning our boy to his home turf any time soon.

A location switch-up always does the show a world of good - whether it be this season's trip to London or Day Seven's outing in Washington - and with Bauer last seen heading to Moscow, there's the potential to see him tear up deepest, darkest Russia in 2015.

3. Bring back Belcheck

Of course, first Jack has to escape from the custody of the Russian government, and while Chloe's mighty resourceful, he's otherwise rather short on allies.

Except, of course, there's Belcheck (Branko Tomović), who proved unwavering in his loyalty to Bauer this season. Despite appearing in 9 of 12 episodes, we learnt remarkably little about the Serbian ex-mobster throughout Live Another Day - an encore for the character, filling in a little of his backstory, is called for.

4. Don't accept Kate Morgan's resignation

Yvonne Strahovski's CIA operative went on quite a journey across Day Nine - transformed from wide-eyed agent to a female Jack-in-training - but once the threat of nuclear war with China was neutralised, she appeared ready to hand in her badge and gun.

But if 24 returns, Strahovski should too. Kate is the show's most promising new female character for years - a potential partner-in-crime for Bauer, with whom she shares a relationship based on respect and trust, rather than any romantic spark.

5. Revive more classic characters

Live Another Day proved that it's possible to bring back figures from Jack's past without totally bewildering first-time viewers, but now that Audrey and Cheng are dead and Heller's no longer fit to serve as President, Day 10 would have to deliver a fresh batch of returnees.

If a character like Cheng can surface, then surely there's room for (another) comeback for fan favourite Tony Almeida? Unfortunately, the notion of President Aaron Pierce is probably a little far-fetched - even for the show that elected Wayne Palmer.

6. The return of this guy grin grin grin grin cheesy

This haughty chap from episode 3 (1:00 p.m. - 2:00 p.m) provided 24: Live Another Day with some much-needed comic relief, delivering the season's biggest laugh as he limply heckled Heller with the deathless line, "What are you going to do about today's incident?!" - he MUST return.

Should 24 return? If Jack Bauer comes back, what do you want from his latest adventure? Share your thoughts below.
