On first look, I was asking same question. The only way I think such a deep "illusion" was achieved was by replicating what is on the back end of the three (what the bark of the tree is blocking) with razor sharp accuracy. By so doing, it blends in perfectly with the background, making you think you are actually seeing through the tree.

It is easy for an artist, the technique is to use light and shadows, I could do some myself.

Python is easy to code..are u a computer science major? You could get online resources and in order not to derail the thread, you could just go to the programming section and ask for help (beware of copy and paste programmers tho) and remember google is your friend.
