Arsenal have a rather unpleasant history of missing out on key players and wondering what could have been. But the latest reports carried in the press today take the Gunners’ ‘so near yet so far’ experience to a whole another level. Spanish newspaper Vozpopuli, widely credited as being the first to report on Alexis Sanchez’s move to Arsenal, has revealed that footballing royalty; Lionel Messi may have been interested in an Arsenal move as recent as last May. Reports claim that Messi was unhappy with the terms of extension he was being offered at Barcelona and made enquiries with former Arsenal captain and now Chelsea player Cesc Fabregas about his time as a Gunner and even went as far as instructing his agent to send feelers to North London. Perturbed by such ungainly talks from their star player, the Catalan giants moved quickly to offer Messi a fresh deal designed to soothe troubled egos. The Argentine ace has since pledged his future to Camp Nou and a move to Arsenal is now unlikely to happen, while he is still in his prime. The news though would encourage those supporters, who are still worried about Arsenal’s attractiveness in the transfer market, clearly the club still holds an aura that few can surpass. http://www.thesportscampus.com/2014072336570/transfer-news/how-messi-almost-became-a-gunner-this-year |

M4gunners: Arsenal play attractive ftball, that is why every good player want to for us. I can see Messi coming. Attractive play alone don't attract big players but attractive play and lots of trophies do. If Messi should make that move then Arsenal could just be on their way to win the Champions league But why not my Chelsea |

There is no doubt that the claims coming out of Spain today that Lionel Messi considered moving to Arsenal this summer have everybody scratching their heads for a number of reasons. While there is no doubting the Argentine’s brilliance (I have eyes in my head), just because he thought about moving to Arsenal doesn’t mean that it would have happened. In the end, none of it matters because he signed a new deal with Barcelona, but what would have happened if he hadn’t? The report claims that he sounded out Cesc Fabregas about Arsenal and was seriously considering moving, but for a transfer to happen you need more than just the desire of the player. In an ideal world there would be no club on the planet that would say ‘no ’ to Lionel Messi, but we don’t live in an ideal world and no-one knows that more than Arsene Wenger. Before we would have ever seen Messi in the red and white of Arsenal there would have had to have been an agreement on both his fee and his wages. Messi’s buyout clause is £200million, or, if you want to put it in terms of something a bit more tangible, almost six Mesut Ozil’s. Of course, should a player want to leave, a club can be persuaded to move on the buyout clause, but he wouldn’t have been available for less than £75m. And that’s a bargain basement estimate. On top of that are his wages. He reportedly earns £15.8m per season. That’s around £300k per week. No player at Arsenal is on half that and Wenger takes the wage structure at the club very seriously. I can hear Wenger’s breathing getting shallow just thinking about paying someone £300k per week. For Arsenal fans it’s a lovely story, Messi wanting to join their club, or even just thinking about it, but it is from the realms of fantasy – whether that of the Spanish journalist who wrote the piece or the land where Arsenal would pay that sort of money, even if it was for the best player in the world. If ever there was a manager who would say ‘no’ to Lionel Messi, it’s Arsene Wenger. Perhaps he’s the only manager who would say no, others preferring to risk bankrupting their clubs just to have him in their shirts. As I said above, none of it matters and when it comes to transfer window madness, this is the most mad thing I’ve heard in years. Still, it’s nice to dream, eh?.. Barce fans should not be dismayed ooo Messi might change his mind oo |
