The 4 Undeniable Truthsabout 2face’s ”ascension”:album Review by Shegman22(m): 7:40pm On Jul 26, 2014 |
Album- The Ascension Label-Hypertek Music Features- Machel Montano,Vector,Iceberg Slim,Rocksteady,Bridget Kelly,Dammy Krane,Kim Almarcha,Shurwayne,Fally Ipupa,Sir Victor Uwaifo,Tony One Week Running time-65mins Somebody pissed 2Face off. An entire track on this album is dedicated to Twitter people, who enjoy abundance of sparetime. A resource they allot to hassling the likes of 2Baba with criticisms. His state of mind towards it all and his recommendation comes down to this…hashtag #Aproko. Now that we have gotten that out of the way, I can describe the album to you. Note however that going from track 1 to track 2 may take longer than you expect. Simply because track 1 ‘’Go’’ with Machel Montano deserves a 5 time repetition. Brethren, that song is a toxic audio hazard. The groove is not noisy and mental, no! It is a safe but blissfully turbulent vibe that makes you want to run into the street and force random citizens to shake body parts. That said, your money is at stake here, so here’s all you need to know about 2Face’s Ascension. 1. The music is R&B/Afro-pop, but it’s got Soca, Zouk and Highlife. Now here’s a man who respects diversity. From Trinidad and Tobago there are Shurwayne and Machel Montano . There is Kim Almarcha from Paris and Fally Ipupa from Congo, both doing beautiful samples of Zouk on ”International Loving” and ”Diaspora Woman”. With these features, The Ascension album a fine assortment of genres, making it very international, yet purely African. Even the song ”Lesse Passe” (which means permit in French countries) with Sir Victor Uwaifo the Nigerian singer and sculptor, shows that international boarders where crossed in sound and content of the album. Track 12 ”Boulay Boulay’ ‘ is an exotic ride into Soul calypso music by Shurwayne. What more exactly do you want? 2Face Ft Machel Montano- GO http://lobatanafrica.com/wp-content/ uploads/2014/06/2face-Idibia-ft-Machel- Montano-GO.mp3 2. 2Face may be ascending but he is still human. The song writing is perceptive. All 17 songs are loaded with profound expressions, which is simply cool because he is singing them in a kick**s rhythm. His story telling mechanism is so acute that as you listen intently, with vivid imaginations provided, you are only aware that he is singing due to the catchy melody. If not it can all pass for listening to sweet gist. The slight flaw is at moments when an expression that sounds better in speech may not be so great in song. For instance on ‘’Best I can be’’ singing ‘’I try to be the best I can be, no need to force it’’ , in a hook, did not sound as normal as hearing the phrase in speech. Also in the verse ‘’If I slap am dem go talk say I dey kolo too, but if I leave am now dem go talk sey I dey fear ey’’ . The lack of rhyme still worked, but the expression was not as perfect as it may have been if spoken. The flaw is almost insignificant due to his spectacular lyrical performance on songs like ”Let somebody love you’’ , with Bridget Kelly . The part where he is propositioning whoever the song is directed at. Like seriously ‘’Gladiator style’ ’? What does that even look like. And then on ”Jeje” he remarks ‘’If aids get cure, dem go don bring am, if motor dey fly dem go do am, if superman dey we for don see am, if to sey we fit see Devil one time we for pai am’’ . Real talk! Won’t you say? His story telling mechanism is so acute that you listen intently, with vivid imaginations provided 3. The instrumentals are possessed. 17 banging beats assembled together won’t be so great if they all sound the same, and thankfully, 2Baba was not having any of that on this project. All 17 songs have active instrumentals that suggest particular care and attention given to their productions. On ‘’Holiday’’ for example, the underlying tune on the track is a soft but quick rhythm, merged with sporadic drum beatings. This is until a point when 2Face goes ‘’everybody start clapping’’, the beat starts thumping, and for real, you better start clapping. No 2 songs sound the same, and it is almost sounds as if every instrumental was infused with a certain spirit, so different vibes come off different tracks. Duplicity was further absent because 2Face really knows how to chew up any beat, just like that fish he claimed to have been eating on ‘’Best I can be’’ , if you catch my drift,…..or his drift rather! 4. 2Face knows you may be frustrated. and you need to chill In this crazy world of strife and stress weighing down people’s minds, 2Face knows better than to bring an album full of tracks requiring some energy to enjoy. ‘ ‘Go” , ”Can’t hear you”, ”Holiday”, ”Jeje” , and ”#Aproko” are wild beats with fast tempos. But when there is a need to slow things down and serenade your anxious soul, ‘’Best I can be , ‘ ‘Kiss of life”, ”Confessions”, ”Hate what you do to me”, ”Close to where you are” , are the territories to explore. Tracks like ‘’Holiday” , have the most fitting hook for feel good music, because who doesn’t love to go ‘’La La La…La La’’. 2Face must have found it imperative to offer those songs that thrill not in fast beats and groove, but in the sensual vocals and message. A perfect sample is ‘’Hate what you do to me’’ . The energy on the vocals is toned down, because the theme of the song is sensitive. Tackling issues of fighting and bonding with a loved one is a suitable moment for such subtlety. ”Kiss of life” is a similarly delicate piece. It is a very warm song with soft verses that claim your undivided attention, as the beats don’t dominate the lyrics or even measure up in volume. There are soft tunes on the album that come off as mental conversations between he the crooner, and you the listener. Verdict: It is only right that we rate this album A for ‘’APROKO are you still here reading?……..Go and buy this right away!!!! |
