Plantain (Musa spp.) occupies a strategic position for rapid food production in Nigeria. It is ranked third among starchy staples. The country’s output doubled in the last 20 years. Production, which is concentrated in the Southern part of the country, still remains largely in the hands of small scale farmers who, over the years, have ingeniously integrated it into various cropping systems. Production is male dominated, while women essentially handle marketing. The inadequate knowledge of improved cultural practices of the crop by the farmers, an inefficient system of extension services and skewness of specialization in areas of research are part of the reasons why yield potential of plantain is still low in the country. Contributions of plantain to the income of rural households in major producing areas in Nigeria continue to increase tremendously in the last few years. Unlike some other starchy staples whose demand tend to fall with rising income, demand for plantain increases with increasing income. With the potential for industrial processing of plantain, which has recently been adopted, and the increased interest in production by small and large scale farms in the country, it is believed that Nigeria will continue to be one of the world’s largest producers of plantain.

Plantains are vegetatively propagated, most often from suckers (shoots that grow from a bud at the base of the plant) or from corms (underground bulbs known as rhizomes). The use of whole corms is very laborious so it is more common to grow from small pieces of corm. There are three different types of banana suckers which are produced by the mother plant; maidenheads, sword suckers and water suckers. Maidenheads have a large pseudostem which does not produce fruit. Sword suckers have a narrow base, short pseudostem and narrow, blade-like leaves. They produce healthy, fruitful pseudostems when they mature Water suckers have short pseudostems and broad leaves. Water suckers are not strongly attached to the rhizome and generally produce weaker plants and less fruit. Maidenheads and large sword suckers are preferred over water suckers.Read more on www.sedulusplantainsucker.com.ng

OW TO START PLANTAIN CULTIVATION
1. Do you have an empty land? if yes you are well positioned, it grows in all kinds of soil but best in a loamy soil
2. Prepare the soil by decomposing it with decaying plants, mulch etc., this is to protect the suckers from the harsh sun that may dehydrate it
3. Get plantain suckers from heathy plant and cut space them
4. In case you wish to add fertilizers, use very little and ensure they are mostly good NPK fertilizers.
5. Do not weed the plantain with any form of modern implement especially at their early stage of development, use mostly hand to weed so as not to harm the tender sucker
6. water them as may be needed

Do you guys use a lot of insecticides and pesticides like they do in the west? We use to grow our non commercial plantain without any form of care, tender or insecticides and we use to get enough from it.

I hate insecticides,I think they are harmful to humans like they are harmful to bugs. Even though the so-called scientists that are sometimes stooges of the big corporations say they are safe.

Considering that a plantain plant is not a tree but a type of herb, they cannot actually be grown from seeds like most trees. Plantain plants are grown through suckers. Suckers are those that grow from a dying, mature plantain plant that can be transplanted and re-grown. They may be considered as baby plants that are used to start new plantain plants. Choose suckers from plants that are vigorous. They should have small, spear shaped leaves and are about four feet high.

yes, I want to do agriculture. How profitable is the plantain farming? I don't have any land yet but we have a little space at our house backyard. Can I start with that? And please do you offer training on plantain farming? And can I buy just a few suckers, like 10, to plant at my backyard to get myself fàmilier with the system? I Live in Benin city. PLEASE SORRY FOR THE MULTIPLE QUESTIONS. IF POSSIBLE, ANSWER THEM INDIVIDUALLY

Contact fungicides

Contact fungicides (also called protectants) are used against foliar diseases. They remain on the surface of plants and act by preventing spore germination. However, they are only effective on the leaves present at the moment of application and can be easily washed away by rain. Their main drawback is the need for repeated applications to protect the new leaves. In the case of BLSD, since most infections start on the underside of the leaf during the unfurling of the cigar leaf, the effectiveness of contact fungicides depends on the quality of the coverage during the unfurling and on the interval between applications. On the other hand, they do not induce the selection of resistant fungal strains.

There are only a few types of contact fungicides. The main chemical classes of contact fungicides used in banana plantations are benzene derivatives and carbamates.

MOKO DISEASE Ralstoniasalanacearun(Race2) Pests and Diseases of Plantain in Guyana Moko disease is a major disease of plantain/banana in Guyana. It is widespread throughout the plantain/banana growing areas. Moko disease of banana is caused bythesoilborne bacterium, Ralstonia solanacearum (Race 2).The pathogens enter the banana tree through root wounds, and quickly grow and spread throughout the entire plant blocking the channels that carry water, thereby preventing the distributionoffoodandwater

(CONDITIONS FOR DEVELOPMENT )Pests and Diseases of Plantain in Nigeria.. The spread and dispersal of this disease is by use of planting materials taken from diseased stands, from mother corm into the suckers and followers. Insects such as bees and wasps also facilitate transmission of this disease. The disease is moved into countries by people and goods; by air and sea and from plant to plant through theuseofun-sterilisedfarmtools.

Fungicides are used as a formulated product consisting of an active ingredient plus inert ingredients that improve the performance of the product. Against leaf diseases, fungicides are mixed with water, oil or an oil-water emulsion and then applied using equipement ranging from small hand-held and back-pack sprayers to large spray units carried by tractors or aircraft: sedulusplantainsucker.com.ng
