Chevening Scholarships are the UK Government’s global scholarship programme, funded by the Foreign and Commonwealth Office (FCO) and partner organisations. The scholarships support study at UK universities – mostly one-year Master's degrees – for individuals with demonstrable potential to become future leaders, decision makers and opinion formers. The Chevening programme began in 1983 and has developed into a prestigious international scheme. Chevening Scholars come from 160 countries and territories worldwide (excluding the USA and the EU), and over 600 scholarships were awarded in 2014/2015. There are over 43,000 Chevening Alumni around the world who together comprise an influential and highly regarded global network. The name 'Chevening' comes from Chevening House in Sevenoaks, Kent – currently the joint official residence of the British Foreign Secretary and the Deputy Prime Minister. Who are Chevening Scholarships aimed at? Chevening Scholarships are for talented people who have been identified as potential future leaders across a wide range of fields including politics, business, the media, civil society, religion, and academia. Applicants should be high calibre graduates with the personal, intellectual and interpersonal qualities necessary for leadership. What does a Chevening Scholarship cover? Most Chevening Scholarships cover: tuition fees (there is a global Chevening fee cap of £13,000 for MBA and Master's in Finance). If the tuition fees of your chosen university course exceed this amount, you will be required to fund the remainder. a living allowance at a set rate (for one individual) an economy class return airfare to the UK additional grants to cover essential expenditure Some scholarships cover part of the cost of studying in the UK, for example, tuition fees only or allowances only. Please check the individual country pages for more details. What else does a Chevening Scholarship offer? An expanded range of Chevening events will be available to Chevening Scholars while on their awards in the UK. The purpose of these events is to engage a substantial number of current scholars in the widening Chevening network. When you complete your studies and return to your home country, your relationship with Chevening does not end. Numbering 43,000 worldwide, Chevening Alumni comprise an influential and highly regarded global network. They have an excellent record of rising to positions of leadership across a wide range of fields including politics, business, the media, civil society, religion, and academia. You will join this network and continue to benefit from your affiliation with the programme. What kind of applicants are we looking for? Applicants should be high calibre graduates with the personal, intellectual and interpersonal qualities necessary for leadership. Evidence of leadership experience and potential is critical. The British Embassy or High Commission in each country where Chevening operates has identified a number of priority areas on which to focus the Chevening Scholarships Programme in 2015/2016.
