The doctor who treated a Liberian man for Ebola in Lagos has tested positive for the deadly virus, Minister of Health, Onyebuchi Chukwu said on Monday.

Patrick Sawyer, the first recorded case of the disease in Nigeria, flew in to Lagos en-route Calabar for an official assignment but fell ill in the aircraft.

Eight persons are believed to have had “first degree contacts” with Sawyer before he got to the hospital.

Chukwu said the eight persons had been quarantined and are under strict observation.

Mot less than least 729 people have died in Liberia, Sierra Leone and Guinea since the virus broke out earlier in the year. International agencies, including the World Health Organisation (WHO) and U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention noted that the outbreak is the biggest in history

“It will take many months, and it won’t be easy, but Ebola can be stopped. We know what needs to be done. CDC is surging our response, sending 50 additional disease control experts to the region in the next 30 days,” Dr. Tom Frieden, director of the U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, said in a statement.
