Insecurity is definitely something to worry about. We all are fast to recall the killing of tens of youth corps members following the defeat of a presidential candidate in the 2011 General Elections. Not only that, the recent indiscriminate bombing of public places also comes to mind. By February next year, another election holds with the lives of graduates mobilised by the National Youth Service Corps (NYSC) put on the line. Corpers would still be used as adhoc members of staff at various locations nationwide. The bombings are so indiscriminate that we don't know where or when next the next would go off. The major point of concern isn't only for corpers posted to the north as generally presumed.

Insecurity is definitely something to worry about. As a stranger in any given community, you can't be sure of what would happen in the next minute (except you have informants). Insecurity isn't only limited to the North. The spate of ritual killings and kidnapping in the South has always been insistent. We are most likely strangers in the respective communities we are to serve and live with people of quite different cultures and traditions. At the end, our security is what matters most.

Insecurity is definitely something to worry about. It all starts with our safety as we journey to the new lands. Let's ensure we are vigilant regarding the vehicles we board and where we board them. It would be unwise to unconsciously book a ticket with a not-so-trustworthy transporter. The security of our lives and property must not be compromised at any cost. Let's get it right from there!

We shouldn't forget that we can't ignore what is applicable in our host communities. Irrespective of how religious, social or cultural we might be, our actions shouldn't be directed to hurt the feelings or beliefs of members of our host-communities. It wouldn't be wise of a 'foreigner' to flout rules against non-natives going out at specific times or killing certain animals just like it would be foolish of a fellow to publicly dress promusciously as defined in another man's land. Though the authorities say national integration is key in realising the goals of the NYSC, I agree with the thought that national integration isn't by force. You shouldn't force anyone to do what others do. It should be within my liberty to do as convenient. Yet, conveniences become useless when they discomfort others. That's why humility and sacrifice in service is the best convenient way to serve. As long as we have mutual respect for one another, conflicts would be avoided. An unfriendly or wicked visitor shouldn't expect to be treated kindly by members of his host-community in times of crisis. We should be careful of what we eat, where we eat, the discussions we dabble into, the times we go out, the companies we keep and the practices we embrace during the times at the Places of Primary Assignment (PPAs). However, let's do the necessary humanitarian intervention in our little capacities and capabilities to influence thoughts in our communities and leave with a bright and good lasting impression. We can't be perfect but we all must recognise that during this service year, insecurity is definitely something to worry about.
