In its bid to retain its number one position among Nigerian universities, the University of Ilorin has launched mobile applications on the android platform to enhance learning, teaching and research.

The Unilorin mobile apps has 30 applications that bring the best experience in learning to students and the University community. The applications include Unilorin e-learning portal, Unilorin Map, Unilorin Cloud, Academic Publications, and Unilorin Journals. It also features apps such as Academic Programme, Students’ Portal, Unilorin Videos, VC’s Speech, Unilorin Facebook and Twitter among others. Speaking on the technological feat, the Vice- Chancellor, Prof. AbdulGaniyu Ambali, noted that the University is committed to making learning and teaching effective by exploring every available technology.

Prof. Ambali explained that the University has always been keen to improve accessibility by increasing its bandwidth to provide seamless internet access to staff and students. He added that the apps would ensure the full utilisation of the PC Tablets made available to new students recently.

The Vice-Chancellor gave assurance that the University would continue to improve its ICT facilities to “make learning and teaching effective and fun”. While explaining the deployment of the mobile applications on the android platform, the University System Analyst, Mr. Monsur Raji, disclosed that the mobile learning can be accessed anywhere the exact moment learning is required.

Mr. Raji disclosed further that mobile learning enables training to be “situated rather than stimulated”, making learning possible at the point of need. He added that the “always-available” nature of mobile learning empowers learners to take the initiative and direct their own learning activated.

“Reading (text and graphics), video, animation, working through decision trees, listening to podcasts, contributing to discussions (forum or sms), researching on the internet, choosing correct answer (text or photograph), rating skills on diagnostics etc., are all means for offering learning on mobile devices”, Raji explained.

Students can download the Unilorin mobile apps from the University website or by simply searching through the google play or android market. The apps can easily be assessed by scanning the QR code.
