THE MEANING OF MEANINGS
(U.S. Ivy League Colleges)

In USA and the world, the term "Ivy League" or "Ivy League school" stands for indisputable academic excellence. Eight U.S. colleges (in USA, the word "college" is used interchangeably with the word "university" are Ivy League schools. Being Ivy League is like being the Muhammad Ali or the Michael Jordan of universities. The world knows of and acknowledges other great performers but YOU, stand alone, above the rest of the best.

Reverence -- and worship -- of the term Ivy League is a source of endless secret tears for many top notch universities in the U.S. West and South. It is rough to know that no matter what you do someone else gets better -- even if not always spoken -- credit. The 8 schools are Brown University, Columbia University, Cornell University, Dartmouth College, Harvard University, Princeton University, the University of Pennsylvania, and Yale University.

The interesting thing is that originally the term Ivy League had nothing to do with academics, much less academic excellence. IVY LEAGUE WAS ALL ABOUT SPORTS. The Ivy League was (is) a collegiate athletic conference (sports league) comprising sports teams from the 8 private institutions of higher education in the U.S. Northeast.
