Keeping your E-mail account secured and protected is essential, Because nowadays 65-70% of internet users back up precious stuff on it and one way or the other your E-mail address is required. Virtually all internet users have google account including android users which is a must for them to own it and as i have said earlier, personal and confidential stuff are store on the internet making use of your E-mail address to enhance easy accessibilty. So our main point today is how we can protect our E-mail address which in-turn protect our personal life from hackers that full internet today.
Permit me to introduce you to Google's two-step verification, Google' two-step verification which is also called two-factor authentication and with this feature turned on, adds another layer of security to your Google account for anyone who uses it for E-mail or apps. Turning on this feature on your Google account account require you to take two steps before you can be allowed to login into your account, i.e after inputing your password into the required box you will receive a six digit code into an associated phone number. Meaning even if someone was able to crack your password, He/She will need to be in possesion of your phone. I know what you are thinking but do not worry i will walk you through the process to avoid waiting for that six digit code every time you want to login into your Google account.
HOW TO SET UP TWO-STEP VERIFICATION
1.) Visit https://accounts.google.com/SmsAuthConfig?hl=en and log in with your Gmail username and password.
2.) Confirm the phone number that you will like to receive the six digit code on and select how you want to receive the passcode which can be via text, voice or mobile app.
3.) It is time to test the system, Click on send code and you will receive a verification code on your phone in few seconds, Enter the received code and click on Verify.
4.) After that you will be asked if you are using a trusted computer, If the computer you are using is secure like personal home Pc or Office computer you only use, You can tell Google to trust it and you will not be asked for the two-factor authentication code anytime you try to log in from that computer. But for unsecured computers, You will need to enter both the password and the passcode anytiime you want to log in to your account.
5.) Click the Red button to turn on two-step verification and re-enter your password.
Back Up Your Phone Number
In case you lost your phone, before you retrieve your lost number you can log in to your Gmail account by receiving the two-step verification code on another number which can be your second number or a trusted freind or family number. Go to Google's account>>Security page>>Click edit button next to two-step verification to add a back up number. Apart from adding a back up number on this page, You can also print a list of back up codes which you can use to log in. Click the show back up codes link for a list of printable codes. Mobile app[Google authentication app] which is available for Iphone, android and Blackberry devices can also be use to receive the codes.
Set Application-Specific Passwords
For apps[Smartphones chat and mail clients] that uses Google account, You have to create application-specific passwords for them.
1.) On the two -step verification management page, click on the Manage application-specific passwords to view all apps that have access to your Google account.
2.) Close to the bottom of the page, There is an area to generate a password for your apps and you should start by giving it a name and click on Generate password.
3.) A 16 digit code will be created for that parcticular app which will be required before you can login to your Gmail account on that app and you can revoke the app's access to your Gmail account any time from the same page.
