Manchester United Lose At Home In Opening Match For First Time Since 1972 by NaijeZie: 4:39pm On Aug 16, 2014
At least David Moyes won his opening game of the season against Swansea last year; But Manchester United are what they have been since last season: The new coach has not been able to prove that he can change the team for the new season as the team seem to have kickoff the premiership with a 2-1 lose to Swansea City as no amount of tactical tinkering ultimately could help the team. Louis van Gaal started with a back three, switched to back four, initially with some improvement. But no system can truly airbrush away a lack of good players and Gylfi Sigurdsson’s goal won the game for Swansea.

Turns out it takes more than a smooth PR fight and the arrangement of a good manager in the person of Louis van Gaal to restore the image at Old Trafford. Louis van Gaal was contracted to end the humiliations of last season suffered by United. But there seem not to have being any improvement so far as proven by United first home defeat since 1972 against Swansea city today.

The presence of Sir Alex Ferguson in the director’s box, joined by Ed and Avram Glazer; the little bunch of away supporters celebrating in the corner, spurring their adversaries and making more clamor than the home fans counting well over 70,000 fans; the staggered doubt all around at the sheer inadequacy and average quality of United; and fans gradually floating away in acquiescence towards the end of the match signals a rather unchanged Man United team.

Truthfully, United were missing Robin van Persie, Michael Carrick, Luke Shaw, Antonio Valancia and Jonny Evans. That alone won’t lift this group, then again. United’s transfer window is starting to look like a bad one. Judging by United first match, it looks like defenders are much needed in the team

If nothing is done soonest, Old Trafford might turn into an easy place where small clubs can pick up points easily as their fortress has been breached and its psychological hold broken.

According to DailyMail.co.uk,

“Initially United had looked impressive but only in a superficial way.. They were doing an awful lot of shuffling from side to side: keeping the ball nicely across the back three but to no effect. Chances were sparse: Phil Jones ventured forward in what seemed like an early sign of the freedom of the formation, exchanged passes with Juan Mata and saw his shot touched away from the top corner by Lukasz Fabianski.

But when Swansea got the ball, they moved it far more effectively; that is, they went forwards. Early signs were apparent Gylfi Sigurdsson got the first shot of the afternoon away on 12 minutes, forcing David de Gea into a save.

Van Gaal had to cope with further injury misfortune on 20 minutes when Jesse Lingard’s United debut came to a premature end after a crunching yet legitimate challenge by Ashley Williams. Readjustments were made and Adnan Januzaj came on.

But Swansea were relishing the space in front of the back three, none more so than Sigurdsson on his return to Swansea. He is a fine player when given his head.

So when a Nathan Dyer header was flicked into him, Sigurdsson took up the challenge, luring in Chris Smalling and turning away from him to set up Ki Sung-yueng on the edge of the box. As Ki shaped to shoot, Wilfried Bony was blocking Jones, so there was ample time to place his shot past De Gea.

The ghostly ambience of last season’s Old Trafford had returned and Van Gaal’s job was change to the mood. He set about his task at half time.

United had been tired and predictable before the break; they emerged for the second half in a 4-2-3-1 formation, Nani having replaced Javier Hernandez, and immediately looked refreshed and energised.

On 54 minutes Jones and Bony rose to meet a Juan Mata corner; one of them flicked it on into the six-yard box and ingeniously Wayne Rooney managed to execute an overhead kick from close range to equalise.

Old Trafford roared once more and it seemed the natural order was being restored. When Rooney struck a post from a free kick on 65 minutes, they looked to have the momentum to win.

Yet United remain desperately vulnerable these days. So it proved on 73 minutes. A quick Bony free kick saw Sigurdsson and substitute Jefferson Montero link up, allowing the Ecuadorian, on as a substitute for his debut, to send a looping cross into Wayne Routledge.

In truth, his effort was more of a mis-hit shot than a cross, but what would worry van Gaal is the space and time Sigurdsson had inside the box to simply turn in Swansea’s second”
