Youths around Olomi area of Ibadan, Oyo State, on Monday staged a protest against the alleged killing of a 24-year-old tanker driver by men of the state Special Anti-Robbery Squad on Sunday night.

The driver, identified as Lekan Agboola, was said to have been shot dead by a member of SARS close to his mother’s shop.

His brother, Gbenga Ajakaye, said the deceased was with him before he left to look for food.

He said, “We were all drinking at our mother’s shop on Sunday evening when Lekan said he was hungry and stood up to look for food.

“Suddenly, we saw a police van heading into a corner. Then, the driver applied brake. Lekan was standing by as all these were happening. The policemen ran towards him and seized him even though he had no confrontation with them. People around shouted at them to leave him alone, but they did not listen to them.

“I can identify two of them – one is simply known as Simisere, while other, Tunde Ayan, is very known. Simisere led the group and ordered his men to shoot Lekan. He was killed instantly. We then put his corpse in their van but one of them threw it away.”

Ajakaye added that some eyewitnesses grabbed one of the policemen and took him to the Oyo State Police Command headquarters in Eleyele.

The state Police Public Relations Officer, Olabisi Ilobanafor, confirmed the incident.

She said the Deputy Commissioner of Police, Sam Okaula, had ordered an investigation into the matter, adding that the policemen in the squad had been detained.

She said, “The command is aware of the matter and the Deputy Commissioner of Police, Sam Okaula, has ordered an investigation into the matter. The police will not hesitate to bring the erring officers to book if found guilty.

“All the officials in the team have been detained. We will not suppress justice. I want to assure the parents of the deceased to take solace in God and believe that justice will be done.” source:www.punchng.com/metro-plus/ibadan-youths-protest-killing-of-driver-by-police/
