One Dies, 2 Hospitalised As Soak- Away Pit Collapses In Ebonyi by Alexas58: 10:47am On Aug 19, 2014 |
ONE-year-old baby, Odinaka Nworu, was weekend reported to have died, following the collapse of a soak-away pit at No. 5 Obi Street in Abakaliki. The two siblings of the deceased, Somtochukwu and Eunice Nworu, sustained injuries as they are currently receiving treatment at Trinity Hospital, Abakaliki. The children hail from Effium, Ohaukwu Local Government Area of the state. Vanguard gathered that the incident happened when Miss Eunice Nworu,10, who was carrying her little brother, Odinaka, on her arms climbed a concrete soak-away toilet pit alongside her other sister, Somtochukwu, 4 and tried to hang their clothes when the pit collapsed and submerged three of them. The tragic incident occurred when the parents of the trio went for an early morning service in the church. Confirming the incident, the father of the children, Mr.Ezekiel Nworu, said he got the ugly news while he was still at St. Theresa’ Cathedral Church where he attended a church service. According to him, the numerous phone calls he received made him rush home immediately to ascertain what was happening. “The tragedy that struck my family intended to wipe out my whole family and put us in deep agony but after frantic efforts in search of my children, we were able to bring all of them out of the pit toilet; only that one of them who is the youngest could not survive it,” he said.
