First, the culture of marrying one's cousin was not originated by Islam. The practice cut across many culture esp Jewish and Arabian society even it is deep-rooted in European, Asian cultures.

Islam was first established in a society where such practice was prevalent. Islam approved it to be correct but NEVER legislated that practice on other society that dislike the idea.

There are some practices among muslims today that are not "Islam-established" practice but are Arabian culture. Islam refine and modify some, abolished some and left some intact.

Islam as a universal religion of different races and culture respect these diverse cultures so long they are not against the principles of Islam.

I am a Yoruba with a culture of "No-cousin marriage". As a muslim, Islam gave other choice to select outside my cousins. On the other hand, an Hausa man, a muslim, can marry his cousin approved by Islam and his culture. It is however wrong of me to abuse him.

Marrying your cousin is incestous.

It comes with the disadvantage of high risk of having a deformed offspring. embarassed

There's nothing wrong with cousins getting married, scientists say

Risk of babies having genetic defects 'has been overstated'

This is why we have to be careful what you read. Read the whole article and not just the title.

Even a blind man will see that the risk of having deformed babies is HIGHER with first-cousin unions than normal ones. Furthermore, the Asian immigrant population is a great study

Peter Corry of St Luke's Hospital in Bradford estimates that among people of Pakistani descent in the city, 55 per cent of whom marry first cousins, the risk of recessive genetic disorders – the type due to related parents – is between 10 and 15 times higher than in the general population. A 2004 study found that 13 out of 1,000 Asian children born in the Bradford area had inherited recessive disorders, which can lead to disabilitie

You know to people like you the fastest so-called scientific fact I can present is the above. You don't need to be scientific to see the offspring of societies where this kind of marriage is common. And you can simply judge the level of children deformity in that environment.

In the Arab world that's most commonest marriage. Hausa are also more into the marriage. Yet NO HIGH RISK OF DIFORMITY.

@ bold,

it is this kind of taquiyyah that turns non-muslims off islam.

The northerners (hausa and other tribes) are actually the worst case in any health issue in Nigeria. You failed on the spot with that!!

You want to talk about Arabs and cousin marriage?

All Arab countries in the Persian Gulf currently require advance genetic screening for all prospective married couples. Qatar was the last Persian Gulf nation to institute mandatory screening in 2009, mainly to warn related couples who are planning marriage about any genetic risks they may face.

Give me a reliable statistics that ever linked Hausa's prevalent disorder with cousin marriage.

The only medical warn is to avoid First cousin's marriage.

“First cousin couples are expected to produce a 0.5–1% increase in the frequency of birth defects and genetic problems. In other words, any couple has a 3% chance to have a baby born with a birth defect or genetic disease, but first cousin couples have 4.5–6% risk,”.

Sharrap. Dishonest troll. Why not read the link you put up and then compare it with other scientific sources.

You just look for titles that confirm your preconceived bias rather than reading what they actually say.

That link, just like every other scientific source, tells you that first cousin marriage leads to a higher risk of having deformed children. Inescapable fact

hahahaha! cheesy ... this man is sick!

thesmallrural! my friend... this article fyi talks about a 35 year research by a genetic specialist, saying people like you have exaggerated the risks of having deformed children in cousin marriage. it says it only occurs if the couples are carriers of disorders, which is very rare. it says again, according to dr bittles that for over 90% of cousin marriages, the risk of having deformed offsping is the same as for regular marriages .

so what do you want mr man?

In our Igbo culture, it is an incestious and unacceptable practice to marry one's cousin and I believe Yoruba culture also frowned at it.

That is what hatred does, no doubt. It blocks sense of reasoning. Cousin marriage exist before Islam in different race and tribe. Jews, Arabs, Arjam, European, Asian, African etc practiced and still practicing it. So what's the fuss about that culture and norm approved by Islam? Quran or the hadith of the prophet of Islam do not command it. It is by choice. I wonder what the fuss is exclusively linking it to Islam instead of seeing it as a cultural practice.
Islamophobes!

You don't need to be a rocket scientist to know that an average Igbo man is greedy and desperate to make money. He will do whatever it takes! Can it be scientifically link to Igbo forms of marriage just like you've "scientifically" linked large deformity crisis in Hausa land with cousin marriage?

Because it is legal in some states in the USA, it stops the risk of having deformed children from being higher?
