NSCDC Discovers Illegal Cement Factory In Abia Village by etenyong(m): 1:37pm On Aug 21, 2014
The Abia State Command of the Nigeria Security
and Civil Defense Corps, on Wednesday paraded
seven suspects quizzed at an illegal cement factory
at Asa Umunka village in Ugwunagbo local
government council of the state.Parading the
suspects, NSCDC Commandant in charge of Abia,
Mr. Andy Dateer, said his men on patrol spotted a
compound that looked like a cement factory and
decided to verify the type of business activity that
was going on there. He said that when his men
eventually raided the compound, they were shocked
by the discovery of over 40,000 bags of cements of
various brands and about one million empty new
cement sacs also of different brands pilled in a
room.NSCDC boss said his men suspected that the
compound was being used as illegal cement factory
wondering how one factory would be producing all
brands of cement, hence , the arrest of the
suspects.Different brands of cements found at the
illegal factory include: the new Dangote 3x brand,
Nigercem, Eagle cement, Freedom cement and
Ibeto cement along with empty bags.NSDC boss
noted that although the incidents of collapsed
buildings were not rampart in the state, members
of the public and unsuspecting cement users
needed to guard against the activities of fraud-stars
who had infiltrated the building sector. He said the
suspected fake cement products would be
subjected to forensic test for analysis while the
suspects would be handed over to the police for
further investigations and prosecution.Later in an
interview, the prime suspect, Chief Samuel
Nwokeneme, 62, said the business was established
early this year by his late son who died in an auto
crash along Enugu- Port Harcourt expressway three
weeks ago.The suspect who was incoherent in his
speech, denied that they were into any illegal
cement production, saying that they had to
continue with the late son’s business to keep the
family going.Asked why they should have in their
custody a stockpile of empty new cement sacs of
various companies when they were not their
registered agents, he said “we are using them to
work.”Another suspect, Chibuzor, 27, initially
claimed that he was only in a near-by ‘joint’ when
he was arrested by men of the NSCDC , denying any
involvement in the illegal business, but later
admitted that he knew that illegal business was
going on there.Asked if he had tried to alert
security agents of the presence of such illegal
factory in his vicinity, he mumbled “some times.”
