The 2014–15 UEFA Champions League is the 60th season of Europe's premier club football tournament organised by UEFA, and the 23rd season since it was renamed from the European Champion Clubs' Cup to the UEFA Champions League.

The 2015 UEFA Champions League Final will be played at the Olympiastadion in Berlin, Germany.[1] Real Madrid are the title holders.

Ten play-off winners join the 22 automatic entrants in the group stage draw at the Grimaldi Forum, Monaco, where the 32 sides are split into four seeding pots and one from each is drawn into the eight groups. Seeds are based on UEFA's coefficient system and no team can meet another from the same association.

Where two sides from the same association qualify, they are paired to split their matches between Tuesday and Wednesday, so one club will always play at home on one day and the other will play away on the other day. In the case of associations with three representatives, only two teams are paired in terms of their fixtures; in the case of associations with four representatives, two pairings are made based on the TV audience.

To ensure sides from the same country play on separate days, the eight groups are distinguished by colour: Groups A–D red and Groups E–H blue. When a paired club is drawn, for example, into one of the red groups, the other paired club – once it is drawn – is automatically assigned to one of the four blue groups.

Teams from Pot 1 are provisionally placed in the first position within their groups, sides from Pot 2 provisionally take the second spot in their sections, and so on. Once the draw is completed, a computer draw determines the final position of the clubs within their group and therefore the order of the home and away matches.

Although the regulations no longer
require the use of regional groups (as used before 2009), UEFA still uses
some kind of regionalization in CL-Q2
and EL-Q1. At first the clubs are divided
into seeded and unseeded teams, and
then the seeded and unseeded teams
are split into regional groups. The general approach seems to use the
North/Central/South scheme, but no
specific rules are known. The clubs defeated in the 1st and 2nd
qualifying rounds are eliminated from
the competition. The 15 clubs defeated
in the 3rd qualifying round are entitled
to play in the 4th qualifying round of
the Europa League, and the 10 clubs defeated in the 4th qualifying round
are entitled to play in the group stage
of the Europa League. The 3rd and 4th
qualifying rounds are split into two
sections: one for champions and one
for non-champions. The Champions League cup-holder

Seeding of clubs

The UEFA administration seeds clubs for the qualifying phase, the play-offs and the group stage in the UEFA Champions League, in accordance with the club coefficient rankings established at the beginning of the season and with the principles set by the Club Competitions Committee. If, for any unforeseen reason, any of the participants in such rounds are not known at the time of the draw, the coefficient of the club with the higher coefficient of the two clubs involved in an undecided tie will be used for the purposes of the draw. For seeding purposes, rankings are drawn up on the basis of a combination of 20% of the value of the respective association’s coefficient for the last five seasons and the clubs’ individual performances in the UEFA club competitions during the same period. Each club retains the cumulative number of points obtained during this period. For the qualifying phase and the play- offs, a draw between the same number of seeded and unseeded clubs determines the pairings, in accordance with the club coefficient ranking established at the beginning of the season. The UEFA administration may form groups, in accordance with the principles set by the Club Competitions Committee. For the purpose of the draw, the 32 clubs involved in the group stage are seeded into four groups of eight, in accordance with the club coefficient ranking established at the beginning of the season. The titleholder is always the top seed. For the round of 16, the group- winners are seeded above the runners-up. Ties The ties are determined by means of a draw. The club drawn first plays the first leg of the tie at home. Titleholder The UEFA Champions League titleholder is guaranteed a place in the group stage even if it does not qualify for the competition through its domestic championship. If the titleholder comes from an association entitled to four places in the UEFA Champions League and qualifies for the UEFA Europa League through its domestic competitions, the lowest-ranked club of the association’s UEFA Champions League representatives is automatically transferred to the UEFA Europa League (into the latest possible round where there is a vacancy). In this case, the number of places to which the titleholder's association is entitled in the UEFA Champions League and the UEFA Europa League does not change. If the titleholder comes from an association entitled to four places in the UEFA Champions League and does not qualify for the UEFA Champions League or UEFA Europa League through its domestic competitions, the lowest-ranked club of the association’s UEFA Champions League representatives is automatically transferred to the UEFA Europa League (into the latest possible round where there is a vacancy).
