England boss Roy Hodgson explains his decision to choose Wayne Rooney as his new captain: "I gave it a lot of thought but Wayne is an obvious choice. He deserves it - his commitment to the cause and his experience. He has captained England in the past and has that responsibility at Manchester United. "I'm pleased to say I've been able to offer it to him. I've had a long conversation with him and he's prepared to accept the pressures that the England captaincy brings. It's important that the player wants to take on that enormous responsibility." |

Hodgson on Rooney More from Roy Hodgson on new England captain Wayne Rooney: "It has been said in the past the captaincy will take him onto a new level. "With his 95 caps, goals and all the things he has done, what we've seen he is willingness to take responsibility. All I can hope is that he continues to play well and shoulders the responsibility as well as the captains before him. "We were bitterly disappointed not to do well in the World Cup. We had high hopes dashed in 90 minutes really. We had been building up for a long time and it's more a chance to continue." |

The Ginger Pirlo Roy Hodgson has been talking about Newcastle midfielder Jack Colback, who has been called up to the England squad for the first time. "I spoke to someone who knows him well and he called him The Ginger Pirlo (after Italian playmaker Andrea Pirlo) and it would be nice if he turned out like that. "I was impressed with him last year and he has an awful lot to offer. He is a very talented player. Suddenly we have lost Steven Gerrard, Frank Lampard and Michael Carrick. Jack plays in a position where vacancies can quickly arise and we will see how he gets on." |

'It was Wayne's time and moment' More from Roy Hodgson's news conference on his decision to name Wayne Rooney as England captain. "When you name a captain it does go through your head that it will make it a lot harder if I had to drop him," says Hodgson. "I don't think Wayne would expect me to keep him in the team just because he is captain. I'd like to think if it was necessary I would do it (drop him) and I'm pretty convinced he would accept it. "We've got players like Joe Hart and Gary Cahill in that they are experienced players, not new to the international team and play for big clubs. It would be harsh on them to say Wayne was the only choice. But had I chosen them it would have been unfair on Wayne Rooney - for most people it was his time and moment." |

'Are you prepared for it?' Roy Hodgson explains what his said to Wayne Rooney when he told him he would be his new England captain. Hodgson says: "In the meeting we had face-to-face we sat down, I said to him 'as far as I'm concerned you're the captain so the question may be do you want it and are you prepared for all it will entail?'. He is perfectly happy with that and perfectly happy to step forward and suffer whatever comes his way." |

'Being England captain is a dream' New England captain Wayne Rooney tweets: Being named England captain is a dream and something I'll take great pride in doing. In an extended statement, Rooney adds: "As a kid I always loved the occasion of watching a big England game on the television. Back then I had a burning ambition to play for my country. Now to be appointed captain is beyond my wildest dreams. "I would like to thank Roy and the coaching staff for having the belief and confidence in me to do the job. "I hope I will have the full backing of the fans. I am their type of player once I am on that pitch. My only thought is to win and give everything I have got. Sharing that desire will be the way I want to captain the team." |

'I see no reason to be fearful' After England's miserable World Cup showing that saw them finish bottom of their group, manager Roy Hodgson remains optimistic for the future of the national team. He says: "I don't think there is any reason for trepidation. With these players we are bringing bringing into the squad, and don't forget there's no Theo Walcott, Ross Barkley or Adam Lallana, I see no reason for us to be fearful. "It will be exciting but there will be some anxious moments to see how these players step up. We've been a bit unlucky that our first qualifier is arguably our hardest one [Switzerland away] and these players may not get the soft introduction they may have had." |

'Arsene assured me Chambers was ready' Roy Hodgson reveals he talked with Arsenal manager Arsene Wenger about whether he should include Gunners defender Calum Chambers in his England squad. The England boss checked Wenger was not "pushing" the 19-year-old "too quickly" and says "Arsene assured me he's ready for any challenge". Hodgson adds: "Chambers jumps over the Under-21s but with 10 injuries and six of them in the defensive part of the field I didn't have the luxury of saying he could start in the Under-21s." |

"Boots to fill" Wayne Rooney is "the right man", "right choice" and will show "enormous enthusiasm", according to Roy Hodgson who has selected the 28-year-old as England captain. "He has a lot to live up to because the previous captains of England have been top men. The Robsons, Beckhams, Gerrards, Lampards," says Hodgson. "I found Wayne mature when I met him two years ago and the experiences have matured him even more with another 20 or 30 caps. He's the right choice, the right man and he'll show enormous enthusiasm and responsibility." |

Phil McNulty BBC chief football writer in Brazil Football "Wayne Rooney's appointment as England captain is the right choice by manager Roy Hodgson - not least because of a glaring lack of obvious alternatives for a post that still retains great significance and prestige. "England's World Cup captain Steven Gerrard and deputy Frank Lampard have vacated the international stage, while the claims of goalkeeper Joe Hart and defender Gary Cahill could not come close to someone of Rooney's status and importance." |

"Lineker seal of approval" Former England striker Gary Lineker believes Roy Hodgson made the right choice in making Wayne Rooney captain of England. "It's great recognition for his efforts over many years. And he said it himself - to be considered a success he wants England to win something while he's captain," says Lineker. "That will be difficult, but looking ahead to two to four years' time, because of the nucleus of young talent we've got, he could be the head of a successful side." |
