Replace V-Z with any of the numbers below.
V+W+X+Y+Z=30
(1, 3, 5, 7, 9, 11, 13, 15). U can also repeat the numbers..This question came in UPSC Final Exams held in Dec '13 and only one person, Gaurav Agarwal could solve it.

If u mean i shud replace each of the letters with one of the numbers in d bracket then its not possible.. Cos all d numbers are odd.. And no way in mathematics can u sum up an odd number of odd numbers to give an even number.. I.e.. U can't sum up 5 odd numbers to give 30...

Interesting. Let's wait and see what others have to say. Thanks for your opinion.

You tried, almost.

(7-1) + (7-1) + (7-1) + (7-1) + (7-1) = 30.

This question got my attention, lemme attempt it. smiley

V+W+X+Y+Z=30
(1, 3, 5, 7, 9, 11, 13, 15).

Since we can replace any letter with V-Z, then let Y=V-Z.
V+W+X+V -Z+Z =30,
2V+W+X=30,
W+X=30-2V,
=>W+X=2(15-V),
Considering both LHS (left hand side) and RHS (right hand side), they must be equal to each other.

After some trial and error, the right/best option is to let
V=13, W=1, X=3.

(Recalculation: W+X=2(15-V)::1+3=2(15-13)::4=2(2)::4=4)
So now, we have V=13, W=1 and X=3.

Recall: Y=V-Z... (i)
substitute V=13 into (i)
then Y=13-Z,
=>Y+Z=13

the two figures that best sum up to give 13 is 9 and 4 (i chose 9 because it's available from the option, also, I can easily manipulate 4).
But, from the option available (1,3,5,...,15), we don't have 4.

N.B: the rule doesn't restrict or limit us to repeat numbers, we can then apply the logic that 9-5=4

9+4=13,
=>9+(9-5)=13
=> Y=9, and Z=(9-5)
.
.
.
V=13, W=1, X=3, Y=9 and Z=(9-5)

Re-computation: 13+1+3+9+(9-5)=30

That's the best I can think of! sad

cool
