WHAT IS EBOLA VIRUS?

Ebola virus is a virus that lives on monkeys, chimpanzees, gorillas, bats, antelopes, porcupines and some other animals.

It was first discovered in 1976 when there was an outbreak of this nature in Sudan and Democratic Republic of Congo.

The Name -Ebola was derived from the River Ebola in Yambuku, DRC (formerly Zaire) where the outbreak started.

EBOLA TRANSMISSION

Ebola virus is transmitted to humans through an infected animal's bodily fluids:

Blood: Butchering or eating infected animals can spread the virus.

Waste products - faeces or urine of infected animals.

Ebola virus is also transmitted from Person to Person through close contact with the BLOOD, SALIVA, SWEAT, VOMIT, SECRETIONS and other body fluids of infected persons OR contact with environment contaminated with such fluids.

SIGNS AND SYMPTOMS

Ebola virus causes severe illness with sudden onset of fever, intense weakness, muscle pain, headache, sore throat.

This is followed by nausea, vomiting, diarrhea, chest pain, stomach pain, weight loss, raised rashes, kidney and liver dysfunction, internal & external bleeding.

** Signs and Symptoms manifest within 2-21days of infection.

** Death rate is about 50-90%.

** Presently, Ebola Disease has no CURE.

** Consult trained health workers immediately you notice malaria fever or any of the symptoms listed above.

** Henceforth, self-medication of any kind should be avoided. Please report ill-health to the nearest hospital.

Prevention focuses on avoiding contact with the virus.

The following precautions can help prevent infection and spread of Ebola virus:

1. Avoid areas of known outbreaks.

2. Wash your hands frequently with soap and water, disinfectant (izal, Dettol etc) or use alcohol-based substance like spirit, vinegar to wash hand often or use hand sanitizer often especially after shaking people.

3. Avoid bush meat and Cook your food very well.

4. Wash all fruits and vegetables with salt and water very well before you eat them.

5. Wash toilet seats before use and wash your hand after using water tap head.

6. Sanitize your door handle either office or home often.

7. Avoid direct contact with sick people you are not sure of their illness.

8. Follow infection-control procedures.

9. Health care worker should wear protective clothing, such as gloves, masks, gowns, caps and eye shields and wash all reusable wears after each use.

10. Keep infected people isolated from others.

11. Dispose of needles and sterilize other instruments properly or burn them.

12. Don't touch sick persons, corpse of human or dead animals.

13. Handling of dead bodies should be done by trained personnel.

14. Avoid crowded places/seats that warrant body to body contact.

15. Ask your Doctor, Nurse, Barber, Hair-stylist, Beautician, therapist to wear new hand gloves or wash their hands with soap and water before touching you.

16. Every family, community, church, mosque, organization, society should educate their members on basic personal hygiene.
