Long before current tennis greats Venus and Serena Williams were born, there was a young Afro American woman from South Carolina who dominated US, nay, global tennis. Her name? Althea Gibson. Gibson got the attention of America by winning her first Grand Slam title in 1956 (the French Open).

For those who dismissed her win as a fluke, she repeated the fit in 1957 and won Wimbledon and the U.S. Nationals, the precursor to the U.S. Open. To quiet any remaining doubters, she repeated the feat again in 1958. For these achievements, the Associated Press named her Female Athlete of the Year in 1958.

Now To The Inspiring Equianoism That Led To Her Greatness: In 1930, her parents left South Carolina and moved to an area of Harlem designated as a Police Athletic League play area. Althea quickly took the opportunity she found to use the sporting facilities she found there, taking up paddle tennis, and by 1939, at age 12, she was the NYC Paddle Tennis Champion. And that was just her beginning.

What People Had To Say About Her (Not The Haters)

Billie Jean King:“Her road to success was a challenging one, but I never saw her back down.”

David Dinkins:“To anyone, she was an inspiration, because of what she was able to do at a time when it was enormously difficult to play tennis at all if you were black.”
