Gun shots caused panic around Wuse Zone 5 at the Headquarters of the Nigeria Security and Civil Defence Corps in Abuja, Friday morning.
Daily Trust gathered that the shooting happened following a clash between men of the Nigerian Police Force and officers of the Civil Defence Corps.
The spokesman of the Corps, Emmanuel Okey who confirmed the incident to Daily Trust, said trouble started when officer of the Corps stopped a police officer from crossing the road at the moment the Commandant General of the Corps convoy was leaving the office.
He narrated that the Civil Defence officers blocked the Police man from passing, forcing him to wait for the Commandant to pass, which irritated the police officer.
Okey said after the Commandant’s convoy passed, a Civil Defence Officer approached the angry police man to explain that it was customary for uniformed personnel to accord senior officers such courtesy.
Apparently, the Police officer was inconsolable, and following an argument removed the civil defence officer’s headdress and punched him in the face before other civil defence officials, Okey noted.
As the shoving and fist cuffs continued other police men appeared at the scene and several gun shots were heard in the area. However nobody was shot, Okey said.
When contacted, the spokesperson of the Federal Capital Territory Police Command Hyelhira Daniel said the police did not attack the Headquarters of the Civil Defence Corps as is being insinuated.
Daniel said the Police Inspector involved in the fight was returning from a restaurant when Civil Defence Officers ordered him to stop for their Commandants convoy to pass.
She said the inspector stepped aside, however the Civil Defence officers were not satisfied and attacked the police inspector after the Commandant’s convoy passed.
When other police men who were passing by came to the scene, one of them shot in the air. Daniel noted that it was not an attack and that the incident is being exaggerated. She called for calm and cooperation among security agencies.
