I know dry season can spell doom for farmers. we lost our snail farming to it in 2006. What initiatives are available for irrigation? I read of a motorcycle powered bike irrigation in Kenya. http://www.businessdailyafrica.com/Motorcycle-powered-pump-now-makes-irrigation-easier-/-/1248928/1461368/-/wmc90qz/-/index.html.

I have green house(s) with drip line irrigation system, We are also trying to import drip line irrigation system for open field Through (ASBON) agric arm. Thiis will help a lot during dry season and it has better coverage to the plant than the sprinkler.

I think surface irrigation with pipes(sprinklers) are still okay for our region, depending on the location of the place to be irrigated, if water is close by, get a pumping machine and sprinkler, or dig a bore hole and set the pipes. My little piece. undecided

I love the traveller irrigation sprinklers.
These are portable and allow you to move from one farm to another.
They can be pretty expensive bit the advantage compensates for the cost.
When you are working on a rented land you may want to put down something you can remove.

Farms that want to maximise profits should put irrigation in place. It is this system that has always helped the North and made farming a profitable venture over there. With the system put in place farmers can realize greater profits than those dealing on fuel

Surface irrigation reduces cost but requires large volume of water down the slope areas. Also much effort is expended on channeling the water course.

@amarawa, l have done an earlier post on it. The pump costs N24K and weighs 1.6kg but sending stuff from Kenya to Nigeria is not cheap but reverse is the case from Nigeria to Kenya as it is just N700 per kg and receive it in 4 days.

Before you talk about irrigation you need to think about the source of water to use is their any river around?and if their is river how big is it?and if the river is big how close is it to your farm land?.

Dry season local vegetable production ( sure path to weath).
Using lagos as a case study, the consumption of local vegetables & fruits e./ ugwu, waterleaf, okro, soko.e.t.c can only be imaged, the dry season is approaching, prices wil increase, and will continue to incrase untill the next raining season, only those with with abundant and easy means of providing water to meet plant needs will profit at this time.
