working paper
Dear Associate,
This is to acknowledge the receipt of your application in respect of ATM Specialist
job advertised by our consulting firm on Tuesday 12th August, 2014. You are
reading this letter because our client has conceded to the fact that every
applicant should be given a fair chance to prove themselves. Nevertheless, we
observed a lot of irregularities in the documents sent to us by some applicants.
Despite this marching order given to us by our client, we still went ahead to
disqualify about ten percentage of the total application received. In our opinion,
these applicants are not ready for employment at all. Their presentation was
below any acceptable standard. Even secondary school students dare not present
such documents and expect to pass WAEC examination! Those kinds of people
will give us problem during the selection process.
If we are to be very strict in following the laid down rules and regulations, we are
not sure if we can get up to half of the two hundred applicants needed. This is a
very sad development indeed. Yet people complain of scarcity of job and the few
jobs available, most graduates are either not qualified or ill prepared.
Let us be honest with ourselves, go back to your documents sent to us and assess
yourself based on the following indices:
 Did you follow the instruction to use a particular caption as subject of your
e-mail to us?
 Did you write a formal cover letter applying for the specific position we
advertised or you just forwarded your CV to us as one of the numerous
organisations you did similar thing to? Is your CV comprehensive and presentable – devoid of typographical
errors?
 From the documents sent to us, are you sure you are qualified for the post
you applied for based on the requirements specified in the advert? Mind
you, we are not university; we want people who can be shown a process
within few days and are independent thereafter.
 Do you think you can pass our science-based aptitude test if you are asked
to take it?
For instance, many did not follow a simple instruction on how to reply us – USE
THE TITLE OF OUR ADVERT AS SUBJECT OF YOUR MAIL. Some sent applications
not meant for us, while some wrote long epistles as cover letter which we are not
prepared to read. Phone numbers were missing in the CV of some and we
observed a lot of typographical errors such as spelling, the use of small letters
where capital letters should have been used e.t.c.
If we are to do the right thing, no matter how good you are, we should have
disqualified you from onset once you fail to follow our rules. You can see what we
are passing through as Consultants dealing with “graduates” not primary school
pupils. You can equally see why so many graduates apply for job and did not get
reply! Mind you, we have not seen your face to see whether you are fine. Neither
had you spoken to us to know whether you speak good English. The only thing we
rely upon at this stage to assess you is the quality of your presentation.
Your cover letter and CV represent you in our bid to access you. Once these are
not well prepared, it’s like presenting yourself in a rag before a panel. Your
document is like product package (label, carton, packet, wrapper etc). If the
package is not attractive to the eye, nobody will care to pick it from the shelf even
if the product is found to be good. For instance, the packaging of ORIJIN bitter
drink from Guinness is too attractive to be ignored; yet the product itself might be
worse than others in that category.
However, our client has given us the go ahead to subject all applicants to test and
how to write cover letter and CV will form part of what we will be doing during the test process coming up within the next forty-five days. In the meantime, we
are working on the logistics implication of the order given to us by our client
either to conduct the aptitude test at our Victoria Island office in Lagos or
concurrently in all state capitals across the country. You will be duly informed
very soon on the modalities for the conduct of the test.
Nevertheless, if you are interested you can e-mail us later under the caption
REWRITE MY CV & COVER LETTER to enable us render this service to you at a
token. We have done similar thing for several applicants in the past and most of
them are employed today. We are not in any way pre-empting the outcome of
this current exercise, but it is good to know how to do the right thing which most
Employers/Human Resources firms are looking for. Even if you are successful in
this exercise, you might still need to apply sometimes in the future if the offer is
better.
Our client asked us to employ capable people with high intelligent quotient who
will be stationed at each branch of the bank attending to customers’ problems on
ATM related issues and enlightening them in the process. Before the specialist can
be certified to carry out these functions, they must be trained for the job by our
client’s partner – a leading ATM installation firm based in Lagos.
With more than twenty thousand (20,000) ATM machines deployed across the
country, there is need for bank customers to get the best out of its usage. This is
more important now that the country has been experimenting cashless banking
technology since 1st July, 2014. Most of bank customers are not very conversant
and in most cases very frustrated with the operations of these machines and
fraudsters do capitalize on this and use it to their advantage.
So ATM fraud is a big problem in Nigeria today. Everybody talk about it and the
media is not left out in their commentaries and articles (see and read Vanguard
newspaper of 17th March, 2014; The Punch newspaper of 6
th May, 2014 and The
Punch newspaper of 25th August, 2014.) all to no avail. The bank must rise up to
the challenge of checking the activities of fraudsters if they are to remain in
business. As cashless banking technology advances so too do the fraudsters. They have
become so clever in the crime that we need to upgrade our strategy in order to
protect and retain our customers. The good news is that more ATM fraudsters will
go down as more people get to know the latest safeguarding technology being
deployed through these trained specialists.
Our client – a second generation bank is partnering with a leading ATM
installation firm to protect and enlighten the masses through there ATM
customer care specialists to be trained. A more robust manual will be developed
at the end of the training. This manual will be mass produced and distributed to
our customers free of charge.
There are sacrifices you must make to be among those to be trained. Yes! You
must be sharp and be able to pass our aptitude test before you can be selected.
The beauty of the selection process is that it will be transparent. You can’t believe
it, your handset (not necessarily the expensive type) will be part of the tools we
will use to test you during the oral interview.
Ordinarily, we should have requested for certified customer services specialists,
but the cost of getting certification from leading training organizations like
Customer Service Academy, Learning Solutions Nigeria etc cannot be less than
one hundred thousand naira (N100, 000). As far as we are concerned, this amount
may be beyond the reach of many applicants. Yet their training might not be
tailored towards our requirement.
So we have come up with a more subtle and economical way to get our recruits
certified by us to our taste by offering them free training by our client’s partner.
Yet all this come with a price. It is worth to note that if you are successful in this
exercise, you will be engaged as a contract staff of our client’s partner but
attached to a branch of the bank of our choice.
A comprehensive guide on how to take the online aptitude test will be sent to
your e-mail address within the next forty-five days. We are not unaware of the
fact that most graduates in Nigeria today are unemployable. So we want to subject all applicants to vigorous screening exercise to fish out the best
(employable ones) out of them.
In the meantime, our client’s partner has recommended a well researched book
written by a renowned Automated Teller Machine Engineer - THEODORE SCOTT.
Most of the questions in the test will be drawn from the book. This book must be
read by all applicants in order to take the aptitude test. Purchase of the book is
therefore compulsory because it will increase your chance of being selected if you
read and understand the content of the manual in readiness for the aptitude test.
If you can get this book from your local bookshop, hurry now and buy it. It is
available in most reputable bookshops in the country. But if you find it difficult to
get it, we can arrange for a copy to be sent to you within forty-eight hours of
receipt of your payment. The cost price of the book is One Thousand, Five
Hundred Naira only (N1, 500). Just add the sum of one thousand naira only (N1,
000) for the cost of courier if you are in Lagos or One Thousand, Five Hundred
Naira only (N1, 500) for the cost of courier if you are outside Lagos. Pay the total
sum into the account particulars stated below within the next seven working days
to enable you read and digest properly the book on time ahead of the test.
Bank : First Bank Plc
Account No : 3086841187
Account Name : OLU COLLINS CONSULTING
Please note that we are only doing this to fasten the process – we are not a
bookshop. In order to still fasten the dispatch of your manual after payment,
kindly send the scanned teller, full house address (including the nearest bus stop),
full name, and phone number to our e-mail address using the caption PAYMENT
and the book will be sent to you. The essence of this is to be double sure because
most banks don’t alert customers immediately a transaction is completed.
Please ensure you check your e-mail inbox and spam box on daily basis to get
update on the recruitment process. You can also phone us for further clarification.
The address of our client has been conspicuously hidden because we don’t want any influence from any bank officials in the discharge of our duty. We assure you
that once you can pass our interview process – aptitude test and oral interview –
you will be employed.
Please feel free to contact the undersigned for further information or clarification.
Yours faithfully,
For: OLU COLLINS CONSULTING GROUP
