PDP Urges Banks Not To Grant Loans To Sokoto Government. by NewDelhi(m): 7:10pm On Sep 13, 2014
Sokoto State chapter of the Peoples Democratic Party(PDP), yesterday urged commercial banks operating in the country not to entertain any loan request from the state government.
It also warned that the PDP would have no obligation to honour any debt agreement entered between any commercial bank and Governor Aliyu Wamakko at the twilight of his administration should the party form government in 2015.
The caution was contained in a statement signed by the PDP Legal Adviser, Nasiru Sahabi, a copy of which was made available to THISDAY in Sokoto.
According to the statement, the warning became necessary following calls by the party to Governor Aliyu Wamakko and the Sokoto House of Assembly not to approve the loan request which were unheeded.
The statement noted that although the governor may have the constitutional powers to seek for loan on behalf of the Sokoto State, it was unethical and morally wrong for this government that has less than eight months in office to obtain a loan of N3.6 billion which it would leave behind for the incoming administration.
"The PDP therefore, advised the commercial banks not to put their shareholders' investment into jeopardy through the grant of such huge amount of money or any other loan to Sokoto State government during this period.
"The party considers the state government's purpose for loan request as a ruse to get money to fund its 2015 electioneering campaigns and not to finance capital projects", the statement added.
However, the state chapter of the All Progressive Congress in a statement signed by its Secretary, Alhaji Aminu Bello, described Wamakko as a transparent leader who would not use state funds at the detriment of the electorate.
The APC therefore, described PDP's accusation as a manifestation of indolence and urged the people of the state to disregard the antics of the PDP.
