If you are a regular user of the internet you must have heard of WordPress, but you may not know exactly what it is or why it is so popular. WordPress is an open source content management system that produces HTML content for web browsers.

I don’t want to sound too technical here, but WordPress is basically an application written in PHP that interacts with a database that stores all of your website’s information. When someone comes along to your site and wants to see a specific page of your website, WordPress calls the database, gets the requested information and sends it in HTML format to the web browser. We could go on further here, but that is really all you need to know to get what WordPress is doing.

I’m going to break down WordPress piece by piece for you here and hopefully when we’re done you will have a better understanding and be ready to really start digging into how WordPress really works.

First, A Few Facts about WordPress (from Wikipedia)

As of August 2013, WordPress powers 18.9% of the world’s top 10 Million websites. Far more than any other CMS (content management system).
In all, WordPress powers over 60 Million websites.
WordPress is written in PHP (a programming language) and MySQL (a database management language).
WordPress was created in 2003 by Matt Mullenweg and Mike Little.
WordPress was based off of a blogging platform called B2/Cafelog.

Open Source

A large reason why WordPress has become so popular through the years is that it is based on free open source software. This means that anyone can use it and anyone can change it to suit their needs. Being that it is open source; a community of contributors has formed around the software thus making it better by benefiting from the knowledge of the entire community.

Easy To Install, Easy To Use & Easy To Code

Another major reason for WordPress’s success is its ease of use. Installation can be completed in less than 5 minutes and many web hosts provide one click installations.

Using WordPress is equally friendly, just about anyone with competent computer knowledge can figure out how to run the basics of WordPress with a couple hours of experience. End users can create and manage content with the same ease of use as any word processor.

Last, WordPress is incredibly friendly for developers. WordPress themes are built mainly using html and some specific PHP functions to help the HTML interact with the WordPress framework and database.

Themes

A theme In WordPress is basically like clothes for a person. They don’t affect who you are or what you have to say, but they do change how you look to others and even your functionality (such as wearing boots and a tool belt).

In WordPress, themes can easily be changed by simply uploading and activating a new theme. These themes add new layouts, colours schemes and even functionality to the website but do not alter any of the content such as pages or blog posts.

Theming is one of the most loved features of WordPress. In it’s most practical form, a WordPress website built in 2010 that is ready for an update today only needs to have a new theme built rather than building an entirely new website and thus loosing old content and established traffic.

Themes can be incredibly simple all the way to complex application style themes. Personally I have built themes that are not much more than only flyers all the way to a fantastic educational theme that can handle staff attendants and students performance using couple of plug-in to modify the theme.

Currently there are 2,190 free WordPress themes available at WordPress.org. A note on free themes though, if you want more custom look and support, consider paying for a premium theme or even a custom theme from a developer.

Plugins

Plugins are another major draw to WordPress. Plugins are tools that add functionality to your WordPress website. Since there is a world of free plugins available, today you can build a WordPress website that can do amazing things all for free using a free theme and free plugins.

Plugins can manage your posts, help with your SEO, add security to your website, add social sharing icons and much more. As of this writing there were over 28,700 free plugins available at WordPress.org with over 500 Million downloads.

Other Benefits of WordPress

Multi Users

WordPress supports multiple users and user levels. Currently there are 4 levels of users including Admin (full access), Editor, Author and Subscriber. A WordPress install can have as many of each of these as the owner wishes. This also is the reason why building membership sites in WordPress are so popular; half of the functionality is already built in.

Easily Manage Content

Unlike a traditional HTML website, WordPress allows users to edit their website content in the same way they would edit a document in a word processor. No coding is required for the end user what so ever to create and manage content.

If a user wishes, they can gain even more flexibility with their content with some very basic HTML commands, but this is not necessary.

Search Engine Friendly

Lastly, one of my favourite aspects of WordPress is that it is incredibly search engine friendly straight out of the box. WordPress supports beautifully relevant urls and with a free plugin such as Yoast’s WordPress SEO, you can add even greater SEO that would take hours of time (or lots of money) to achieve with any other content management system.
