I may not know all the equivalents in standard igbo but what matters is getting them correctly in whatever dialect one chooses to use. Standard Igbo is a hybrid and belongs to nobody only spoken during news broadcasting or in writing. Orally, everyone sticks to what is familiar to them.

i knew anyone will come up and state what those things are called in his own dialect so i explicitly stated that it should be in standard igbo which everyone is familiar with cos anybody can come here and say anything and claim it is right in his own dialect. Igbo is igbo but on a general platform or forum, the central igbo becomes a standard whether you like it or not else any igbo newscaster or novelist should speak his or her own dialect na. Then we will know that he or she is on her own. An igbo guru is one who is guru in central igbo and not his dialect cos he can virtually communicate effectively with anyone else.

I get your point. Take this for example. What of people not versed in central Igbo, ie our grandmothers in the village who grew up in the village that never left the village, who can speak impeccable Igbo in her dialect for 1 hour without adding 1 single word of English, and comparing with you - the township Engiligbo speaker who can barely speak for 5 minutes without adding English, the fact that she doesnt speak in a hybrid dialect makes her a less Igbo guru than you are?

It would be totally wrong to place central Igbo higher than original Igbo dialects because central Igbo dialect was borne out the same original dialects you downplay. Central Igbo was made for the sake of convenience for speakers of mutually unintelligible Igbo dialects which other Igbo speakers find difficult to understand ie Nsukka, Ezza, Mgbo etc. Certain Igbo dialects are easily understood already by speakers from other dialects and speakers of such dialects don't feel the need to speak in central Igbo to be understood ie general aba dialect, Onitsha dialect, Enugu township dialect etc.

For the sake of your thread, you are free to call the tune and dictate the rules of your thread. My point is you shouldn't invalidate original Igbo dialects because you think non-speakers of Igbo izugbe are 'less Igbo guru', for Igbo Izugbe isn't spoken natively by any group in Igbo-speaking areas, and only used for official purposes.

you are getting me wrong. But still i just want you to know that there is a standard for igbo language. If i had given answers based on my own dialect everyone will dispute it's wrong except those from my place. Like we call toilet otikpiri. Far out of central igbo. And i'll repeat that an igbo guru is one who can speak central igbo cos most new words came in through central igbo. If you are fluent with your dialect, then you are a guru in your own dialect but not in igbo generally - believe it or not, cos you can't communicate with a larger public. Let's not derail the thread but just know i didn't downplay any dialect but only letting you know that standard is standard. Write you dialect in any igbo exam and it's a failure for you. Are the examiners downgrading your dialect? No! But you went out of standard. Moreover, i need not even state it out that it should be in standard igbo any one reasonable will know that everyone don't speak same dialect as he does so he should provide what everyone will agree with.
