The Chairman, House Committee on Education, Hon. Aminu Suleiman has said that the committee was doing everything possible to remove the difference between the fresh graduates from the universities and the polytechnics in the country. According to him, this is necessary in order to encourage more students to go for polytechnic education. He said this while on a visit with other members of the committee to Yaba College of Technology (YABATECH), Lagos, last week. “If Nigeria must obtain technological development, there is need to pay more attention to technical and vocational education which is provided by the polytechnic,” he said. On the purpose of the visit, the chairman said the committee is out to ensure that public funds provided for the advancement of education in tertiary institutions are used for the purpose they were provided. He also said the visit had given them the opportunity to see the challenges some of the institutions are facing and the need for government to support them with more funds. He commended the management for the infrastructure development in the institution. The chairman also said what the committee saw in the institution compare to other institutions visited before them showed that the management of the institution deployed funds for the purpose which they were provided. Earlier in her speech, the Rector of the institution, Dr. Margaret Ladipo appealed to the Federal Government to assist the institution with more funds in order to improve its service delivery. She also said there is need for government to grant substantial funds to the college for research, conferences and staff development in order to improve the knowledge base of the staff and sustains standards. Thanking the committee for their support and commitment to educational development of the nation, Ladipo said the vision of the institution is to be a leading higher educational institution in Africa by providing first rate academic, professional and entrepreneurial education for students. |
