Arsenal boss Arsene Wenger is likely to rotate his squad, and could give a debut to goalkeeper David Ospina. Tomas Rosicky, Joel Campbell and Lukas Podolski will also hope to start, but Mathieu Debuchy is out for three months after undergoing ankle surgery. Youngsters Isaac Hayden, Chuba Akpom and Semi Ajayi may feature, as could fit-again midfielder Abou Diaby. Southampton hope James Ward-Prowse and Maya Yoshida will be fit despite being forced off with injuries at Swansea. Toby Alderweireld is likely to again miss out with a hamstring problem. Forward Sadio Mane is set to make his first appearance since joining from Red Bull Salzburg. Victory in last season's FA Cup final ended Arsenal's nine-year wait for silverware, but the League Cup is the one domestic trophy that has so far eluded Arsene Wenger in his 18-year tenure as Gunners boss. In fairness the Frenchman has rarely prioritised the competition, and despite reaching the final on two occasions, he has often chosen to blood youngsters in the early rounds. However, Arsenal's recent recruitment, which has taken their wage bill above Chelsea's for the first time in more than a decade, means the Gunners have a raft of senior players in need of a run-out on Tuesday. Ronald Koeman gained his first win as Southampton boss as Saints eliminated Millwall in the second round. That victory has proved a catalyst for an encouraging run of form that has yielded three successive Premier League wins, taking Saints up to second in the table - their highest top- flight position since 1988. A first victory at the Emirates would give them five consecutive wins in all competitions - which would be their best run for over three years. Head-to-head Arsenal are unbeaten in their last 10 matches against Southampton in all competitions (W6, D4) since losing 3-2 at St Mary's in the Premier League in November 2002. This is the fifth time the sides have been paired together in the League Cup. Arsenal advanced on all four previous occasions. Arsenal The Gunners' last domestic defeat at the Emirates was their 2-0 loss to Chelsea in the fourth round of last season's League Cup. Arsenal have won nine of their last 11 home League Cup ties, scoring 29 times, with their only defeats coming against Manchester City in 2011-12 and Chelsea in 2013-14. They have failed to keep a clean sheet in their last nine matches in this competition, a sequence that began with defeat to Birmingham in the 2010-11 final. The last time Arsenal failed to advance to the fourth round of this competition was in 2002-03, when they were eliminated by Sunderland. Southampton Saints have reached the fourth round of this competition in each of the last three seasons. They have scored exactly two goals in each of their last three third round matches. They were League Cup runners-up in 1979. http://m.bbc.com/sport/football/29216769 |
