Parents! They always want their children to read professional courses.

I think you should steal the DVC's Phone number from your dad's phone and call him so that he can talk to your dad. Education in Nigeria today is just taking a different dimension. So many students are writing jamb every year and the spaces available in our universities are not enough to accept these thousands of student. That's why some after writing jamb for many years don't mind studying a course they never wanted to do. Not because they like it but because they were left with no other option than to accept the one offered to them by their preferred choice of institution. Thousands of students in Nigerian tertiary institutions are doing a different course from what they wanted to study when they were in secondary school. And you find out that many of them are happy doing that particular course. In essence, if you love the course that they offered you and you will be happy doing it in school and that you will be proud to tell people that this is what am studying in school then go for it. Why I said 'be proud' is because some student are not proud of what they study or is studying in school maybe for their own personal reasons. So if you like it then find your dad's best friend especially one(s) into academics that will relate to him the dangers of you staying at home for another year or even years. Opportunities like this are very hard to come by. Opportunities they say comes but once. You may not be this lucky next time. Remember that, when the desirable is not available, the available becomes desirable.

And remember also that what you read in school does not really matters this days, what matter is your certificate and your capability of defending that certificate when the need arises without having any problem or mincing words. I wish you all the very best.

She has decided to go... And I told her if she makes a 2'1 in her first year, she can get the change of course/ faculty form... But that stuff is really hard and it's frustrating... Really..

She applied for physiology but was given health education.....

my advice is that she should go for it since inter faculty transfer is possible....just a good g.p.a after 100level will land her in physiology.

Tell your Dad my story.

I was "cajoled" to study Medicine from a young age by my mum. so I did Jamb 3 times, did not fail once as i scored 224 Ist time, 250 2nd time, and 284 final time and entered UI medicine when the cut off was 280.

After 4 years at UI Medical school, I became disillusioned, lost the zeal to study and the final straw that made me leave was consistently seeing people score more marks than me in exams when 20% of my class were known to cheat in exams and the already brilliant Professor of Medicine's children would see the exam questions before the d/day and leak same to their friends and hangers on and anyone who was adept at doing eye service which I wasn't.

So, I left Medical school much to my mums dismay and started and completed the ACCA exams at my own pace

How many years and how much money was wasted ?
3 years on Jamb + 4 Years at UI making 7 whole years plus a lot of money on feeding, travel and expensive text books.

This time needn't have been wasted if my Mum did not brain wash me from a young age that I was going to study Medicine. The hand writing was already on the wall that I was more gifted with figures as i did not have to study to pass Mathematics. Once the teacher or my dad explained the logic to me, it stuck forever.

Its not what you read at school that makes you in life but who you know and a huge dose of LUCK.

If I came to life again, I would choose and do the easiest course in the Uni because that almost guarantees me a first class degree and means that whilst my Law, Engineering and especially Medical shool mates are studying for 16 hours a day, I can study for just 3 hours a day, join the right social clubs, go to all the fun parties, have time to socialise and build future networks AND STILL get a first class degree.

And later, I will get good jobs or contracts faster than my brow beaten / "hard course" / damaged / tired colleagues because in this Old boys network world, the fact that I had enough free time to socialise with the right people at Uni means that any good jobs or contracts going will possibly have my name in the top prospects list simply because I had time for socialising at Uni because I did not choose or was not forced to do a difficult course that wears you down with next to no future financial rewards.

There are so many Hungry Lawyers and Underfed Medical Doctors in Nigeria.

Or why do you think Governor Mimiko, Governor Uduaghan and Ex-Governor Odili who are qualified Medical doctors decide to hang their stethoscopes and venture successfuly into politics.

The current Governor of Ogun State Ibikunle Amosun had F9 parallel in Maths, Physics and Chemistry O#levels and still became Governor. This proves once again that "Its not what you know but who you know" that matters in life

All the best but any course you do, make sure you keep your eye on the ball by knowing that what matters in future are the doors that would be open to you by the good people you meet whilst doing the course of your choice.
