My people...please share your experience on parent/child relationship turned
teacher/student ( when your parent becomes your class teacher or lecturer); or
boss/subject (when your parent is your boss)...

A friend of mine just got a teaching job, accidentally her child will be in her class... We had an argument where she told me she won't teach the next topic if her child fails to grab (Nursery Class grin). I feel it is an injustice to the child's colleagues.

Please are they bias in their judgement at the detriment of your colleagues..especially when it comes to discipline, appraising e.t.c...
Do you enjoy it...are you a parent a child or a third party (you had or have a colleague whose parent happens to be your teacher or boss)..
How can one remain a professional in situations like this? share your experience.

N/B: parent here is your biological mother or father

A teacher / lecturer should never be allowed to teach his / her own child and then mark their exams.

Apart from the objectivity that he / she lacks when it comes to grading his / her child, the child is put in an awkward situation that will either put him / her or his / her classmates at an disadvantage.

It usually happens coincidentally.
I've been in classes where the tutor had a child or relative as one of the students, even in the university.

As for grading exam papers and from what I know, exam papers pass through different stages before the final results are approved...this is how it was done during my time in the university.
As long as the marking method/scheme is made available, an exam committee cross-checks everything before forwarding it to the senate for approval.

There are no such coincidences if the management is well organized. wink
That's what I am saying.

As far as I am informed only the final exams are cross-checked.

How well should management be organized when the son/daughter of a professor gets to final year, and has to take lectures from his/her father who specialized in & is the course coordinator/lecturer for Year 5 Chemo-neuclear engineering?

In this rare scenario the child will attend his / father's / mother's lectures but take the exams elsewhere.

What do you mean by take the exams elsewhere? Another department?
Sorry I'm not following your line of reasoning here.

Interesting. I think the parent in the OP is wrong for saying what she said She should strive for impartiality. Though it's difficult. I have seen teacherGstudent- child/parent relationships were they parent is impartial, I have seen some were other staff were partial to the child, but there are some parents who actually work to ensure their children are treated fairly and given no favours.

Such problems are for the university staff and the Ministry of Education to solve. This is not my job. wink

Are you saying the university management will hire a private lecturer for the student simply because he has a parent who happens to be the only specialist in a particular field of study?... No, I don't think so...I think we should focus more on how one can be a true professional in such case scenario

And I'm saying it's not a 'problem', you the one claiming it is...so I expect you to have at least one solution to it, your job has nothing to do with this discourse.

Well...just that this scenario doesn't create avenue for punishment or appraisal..... Am talking about the ones where favouritism abounds just because the parent/child thing is involved
