The bible has enriched the english language with some phrases and idioms.


1.) "see the light"

2.) eyes open
a term borrowed from Jesus' miraculous healing of d blind.
Used to describe a state of enlightenment.

E.g wen ur eyes open , you will see wat i am sayg.

3.) Prodigal Son/daughter
from d parable of the prodigal son.
Describes a person who rebelliously leaves a fold and /or later discovers d folly of his ways and returns.
E.g the prodigal son has returned
go/turn prodigal

4.) Bear/carry cross

from Jesus' act of carrying his death cross to his crucifixion site.

E.g i guess i hav to bear my cross
that's her own cross
we've all got our crosses

5.) Crucify him/her

from the biblical incident of Jesus' judgement where d mob called for his murder.

E.g
you want to crucify him/her for ...
He/she proposed x and they wanted to crucify him/her

6.) "in the beginning was .... "
from the opening words in d book of John.
Used as inspiration by popular media.

7.) you reap wat you sow
culled from the bible verse that warns on a person reaping wat he sows.

8.) armaggedon
from apocalyptic prophesy described in the book of revelations.

9.) alpha and omega.
From the descriptive term of Jesus in d book of Revelations.

10) let my people go
From the story of the isrealites and pharoah in d bible.
Used to describe a situation where a student is given a grade just so he cud graduate.

11.) from the horses mouth
from d story of the talkg donkey in the OT.
E.g i heard it from the horses mouth

12. Manna from heaven
from the story of God raing food down on isreal from d sky.

E.g you think a job is gonna fall from d sky/heaven?

13.) looking back
From Jesus' warng tht no one who looks back is fit for the kingdom of God.
E.g i've made up my mind no looking back

14.) break the chains
popularised by preachers preachg deliverance , exorcism, the usage is now mainstream.
E.g break the chains of depression/lack

15.) scales from eyes
from the story of paul, whom scales fell of his eyes after his encounter with God tht left him blind.

E.g when the scales came off ,he realized he had been scammed ...

17.) Words fall to the ground

from d bible description of Samuel,A prophet, whom the bible had such to say about him.

E.g i don't like my words falling to d ground.

18.) empty words
from bible descriptions of d characteristics of God's words.

E.g (of a person) his words were just empty talk no substance.

19.) Spirit is willing ...
From the bible verse describing the inner conflict in a believer.

E.g i wanted to go to the gym but ... The spirit was willing but

20.) fell by the way
From the parable of the sower.
Describes people wu didnt complete a course etc.

21.) fire and brimestone.
From bible description of hell.
E.g the boss threatened fire and brimstone if ...


E.g many started the race but some fell by the wayside.

21.) not to the swift.

From the musings of the author of d book of ecclesiastes.

22.) I guess this phrase is so main stream some people dont know it's true origin.

E.g boko haram is a thorn in the flesh of the government.
