Well, how come there is NO submission from Nigeria. I thought an Oscar committee was setup? Is it that no film in Nigeria meets the criteria? Prof800 Sholay2011 Speedyboi VillageBoi jayboy124 Lynx200 |

Foreign flicks make for a welcome break from the often overplayed, overhyped Hollywood themes. Stashing this list. |

^^^ ^^^ It's actually not a bad idea. There are many 'old' Nollywood films that had really good captivating stories and let's be honest... there are very few good 'new' Nollywood films obviously minus the uber-crappy 'we-are-now-so-posh-and-white' romantic drama drivel that seems to be the in-thing. Why not re-make good old Nollywood films - far better filmmakers, equipment and more knowledge now... just saying, just a thought. 1 Like |

Maybe its because our film producers are more commercial driven than art driven and the Oscar committee looks at films that have a strong message to deliver, a reason why many American action blockbusters hardly win. Maybe the producers never submitted it to the committee or they didn't even call for entries. Films like Apaye (a biography) and half of a yellow sun would have been great nominees. I doubt if October 1 would have been considered because though a good film its overtly commercial. |

Briareos: sholay2011:I don already talk sey, if the committee feels that the films submitted are not up to par, they may never select a film for submission in years. And "October 1" isn't qualified, cos of language! What I'm thinking this committee would do is plan and make a film specifically for Oscar submission. It just keeps coming to my mind....they'd give Oscar exactly what it wants 100%. btw on the submissions, I saw the Indian film "haider", and I thought that was a very good film! Maybe it wasn't ready when they were submitting or something? |
Re: Oscars: 83 Movies Submitted For Best Foreign Language Film Category by Nobody: 11:47pm On Oct 21, 2014 |
sholay2011: On another note, maybe October 1 would've qualified...the film is roughly split in English and Yoruba....if we should add the convos in Hausa and Igbo, then I think usage of English is less than 49%....I guess the film wasn't ready when the committee called for submissions. |

Re: Oscars: 83 Movies Submitted For Best Foreign Language Film Category by VillageBoi(m): 8:13am On Oct 22, 2014 |
speedyboi: 49% will qualify the film, though it's probably best not to have it that high. For this year they have missed it as I think the 'release deadline' is still Sept 30? While this film was released on Oct 1 abi? But that is actually pretty good news because they now have a YEAR to re-edit it and cut out a bit more of the English to be very safe and then it CAN qualify much later in 2015 for the awards held in 2016. Anyway, Nigeria has a committee and it's their job to know all of these things... and more. Can't wait for the film to reach here |
