He had great potential but in the end, he turned out to be a showboater just like Denilson de Oliveira Araújo.

'Great potential' to be WHAT exactly? He TOOK his chance to shine when he was given it. It's not like he could FORCE Real Madrid or Barcelona to sign him, even though at the time they had many far lesser players in their ranks. What were Soldado, Nunez, Alex Perez etc doing at Real Madrid when JAY JAY was around? Those guys were not fit to shine Jay Jay's shoes, yet they were at Real Madrid and Jay Jay was at Bolton. Everyone who watched Okocha play, including TV commentators, ALWAYS wondered why he'd not been signed by those two clubs. Or AC Milan, Man Utd etc. Maybe they couldn't stomach a Nigerian being their MAIN player, As Jay Jay would have been on ANY team including Brazil.

Jay Jay Okocha was the man whom the great Brazilian legend, Mario Zagalo, who played alongside Pele, personally ran across the pitch, as Brazil coach, to shine Okocha's shoes, after the maestro's performance against the Samba boys in Abuja in 2003. He said Jay Jay must be a Brazilian, not a Nigerian!

So what are we talking about? Even Messi hasn't received that type of accolade from any of the world's greats.

Potential to become one of the all time African greats such as Eto'o, Drogba, Weah, Mila, Kanu and Abedi Pele.

Okocha was a great dribbler of the ball but that was it, he played at a mid table club and his individual honours speak for themselves. His main problem was consistency hence why I compared him to Denilson.

Yaya toure is an african nd he is leading man city, Eto was Barcelona top striker for abt 4 years and a nigerian also played for barca in the 1990s, mikel was nearly thorn apart by man u and chelsea, they wanted him badly.. my point is african/nigerian or not, you would be rewarded accordingly if you are that good. Okocha is jst over hyped by people like you. Why not jst say he is better than zidane, Dilema Ronaldo, Messi and C.Ronaldo. #nonsense

So, midfielders I named who were playing for Real Madrid at the same time Jay Jay was at Boltion - Soldado, Nunez, Alex Perez. Are you saying any of these players was as good as Jay Jay Okocha? Even Beckham was bought by Madrid. Beckham cannot shine Okocha's shoes. Were Luis Garcia and Luis Enrique who played midfield for Barcelona as good as Okocha? See, when football intellectuals like us are are talking, kindly shut it. A NIGERIAN playmaker - arguably the most skilful player on earth in his prime - was simply NOT on the cards for the 'big clubs' of the period. Mikel? He was an attacking midfielder. They took him and turned him into a defensive midfielder, in order to ''use his strength'' as opposed to his skill. Brawn not brain. That's what they tend to want from African footballers - ''pace and power'', ''strength'', or to be the ''big man upfront''. Surely not the midfield maestro, the intelligence behind the team. A NIGERIAN at that? Hell no. They KNEW Jay Jay would make WPOY if he played at Barca or Madrid. They KNEW he would overshadow Raul, Xavi and iniesta in Spain. Not good for business. If Jay Jay Okocha was Dutch, Brazilian, English, French, Spanish or German, he would have been bought by the biggest clubs. And he would have had his chance to be WPOY.

You obviously lack home training to indulge in such filthy language.

Eto is a STRIKER you DUNCE. I never said the Europeans had anything against African strikers. I stated that a PLAYMAKER had greater prestige in Europe and was thus not considered ''suitable'' for a NIGERIAN African during Okocha's era. You may disagree, but everyone is entitled to their opinion. That you feel a need to insult my mother shows you've lost the argument and are frustrated. Care to tell us why those names I mentioned were at Madrid and Barca while Jay Jay was considered ''not good enough''? Of course you cannot address that question. Why don't you tell us all here and now that those players I named - Soldado, Nunez, Perez etc, were all better than Jay Jay, so we can laugh you out of the court? How many of them were named among the best living 125 players on earth by Pele, like Jay Jay Okocha was?

Mayb he wasn't sound tactically for the big clubs. U should understand that football is more than just raw talents . Don't forget okocha only started scoring in his twilight , he hardly cud score in his prime . He never scored for Nigeria at d WC . Players like Ariel Ortega or hagi were also exceptional but never played for big clubs as well . Okocha cud as well fall in that category

Absolute horse manure. Sure, Soldado, Nunez, Perez, Luis Enrique and other average midfielders were ''sound tactically'' for Madrid and Barca, but not the world's most skilful player? One dimensional, skill-challenged, anywhere belleh face Beckham was ''tactically sound'' for Madrid but not Jay Jay Okocha? SING ANOTHER TUNE.
U should understand that football is more than just raw talents . Don't forget okocha only started scoring in his twilight , he hardly cud score in his prime...

Some of you must have been in nappies when Jay Jay began playing top flight soccer. I just mentioned above that he scored 32 goals in 60 games in his time at Fenebahce. THAT was his prime. Just because you didn't watch that league the way you watch EPL everyday today, and don't know about his goals there, and only began watching him consistently when he was at Bolton (EPL) doesn't mean ''he did not score in his prime''. Get your facts rights before typing. Do some basic research. It doesn't kill. I recall a game Fenebahce played against Man U in England. The English commentators kept asking ''what is a player like this doing in Fenebahce?''. They simply couldn't understand how Jay Jay - EASILY the best player on the field, with his mesmerizing dribbles, clever passes, assists and shots, could be at such a lowly club by European standards. It made absolutely no sense to them, just as it makes no sense to anyone today with their thinking caps on.

Okocha was a very talented and skillful player, one of the best the world has seen. But he was never taken too seriously because he himself didn't take football too seriously until his twilight years when he joined bolton. Imagine the disgrace of Oliver Khan and 4 defenders when he could have easily scored, he chose to dribble back and forth. Yes he eventually scored but that shows unseriouslness.

Jay jay in his prime chose to entertain than do something positive to help his team win. This is one of the reasons no big club came for him, and this is the reason he wasn't there among African greats like abedi pele, Samuel etoo, George weah, kanu nwankwo. Etc.

That is what u call accolade? Seriously? Mario zagalo giving okocha a handshake after a match is what u call accolade? When people like kanu, etoo, drogba, George weah and even Freddie kanoute were winning something tangible with their teams. Well if that is what u call accolade then I guess the truth speaks for itself.

You couldnt put it any better

With all his skill, it lacked end product and this was rectified in his latter years of his career. In germany they were times he dribbled unneccesary and loose the ball. Cristiano Ronaldo was the same but that he learnt to apply his skill at the right time and right place. Go and find out why the French will never forgive David Ginola
