Mecca is a city located in Saudi Arabia where able Muslims go for pilgrimage to perform the Hajj, which is one of the Five Pillars of Islam.
Mecca is the birthplace of Muhammad and where he received the first revelation of the Quran.
Within the city of Mecca is the Kaaba which is Islam's holiest site. Kaaba is where Muslims all over the world are expected to face when performing their prayers (known as salat: ritual prayer five times a day). It is believed that the Kaaba was built by Ibrahim (Abraham) and was the first house that was built for humanity to worship Allah (God). Kaaba means “The Cube” in Arabic.
Pilgrims to Mecca perform Tawaf: moving around the Kaaba seven times in an anticlockwise direction.
In Mecca can be found Al-Masjid Al-Haram (meaning The Sacred Mosque) the largest mosque in the world; the Kaaba is located right in the middle of the mosque.
Between two to three million Muslims arrive in Mecca during the last month of the Islamic calendar for the Hajj resulting in huge demand for Hotels and other services in the city.
In fact, the Saudi Government prepares for the Hajj all year round because of the huge logistics and planning required to host such a massive influx of people.
