Some couple of hours ago, I saw a thread on Education section, listing out the "Nigeria’s Top
10 Best Universities 2014 –"Webometrics."
We'll quite agree that this method of ranking has been on for some years now, but many people don't still grasp the full meaning of the webometric university ranking.
It's the custom of students to argue about the result of the Web ranking, reason being that we're still oblivious about that content. In summary, I will say The Webometrics University Ranking is a ranking
system that has nothing to do with school landscape and structures, but it's based on university web presence, visibility and
web access. This ranking system measures how
strongly a university is present in the web by its own
web domain, sub-pages, rich files, scholarly articles
etc. The central hypothesis of this approach is that
web presence is a reliable indicator of the global
performance and prestige of the universities and as
such, is an indirect way to measure all the university
missions (teaching, research, transfer). Although the
Web is universally recognized as one of the most
relevant tools for scholarly communication, it is still
very rare these indicators are used for the evaluation
of the scientific research and the academic performance
of universities. Webometric indicators are provided to
show the commitment of the institutions to Web
publication.
So when next you see a Web ranking don't get too worried if your school isn't listed or your school slipped behind, it doesn't means your school is poor academically, rather, it's just showing that your school presence on Web is little or has reduced.
