UK Operator Launches 150mbps Internet (4G+) by Damey2011(m): 1:01pm On Oct 30, 2014 |
EE’s 4G customers in London will get a speed boost from today, the mobile phone operator has announced. The increase in mobile internet speeds is being delivered as a result of EE switching on its 4G+ network in the capital. Also known as LTE-Advanced (or LTE-A), the quicker network makes use of the 2.6GHz spectrum in order to deliver download speeds of up to 150Mbps, according to EE. Average speeds on the LTE-A network will be 60Mbps slower at 90Mbps. It will be rolled out across Greater London and several of the UK’s “busiest cities” in 2015. The higher speeds offered by LTE-A networks can only be utilised by customers that have a compatible (Cat6) device and plan (4GEE Extra or Corporate 4GEE). Currently there are only three devices on the market that are compatible with the high-speed network - the Samsung Galaxy Note 4, the Samsung Alpha and LG G3. The new iPhone 6 and 6 Plus only support up to Cat4 (and therefore only a single band at any one time), so won’t be able to tap into the faster speeds. However, EE’s existing customers on ‘double-speed’ 4G should also see a slight speed increase as a result of the new spectrum rollout. Olaf Swantee, CEO at EE, said: “The UK is now back to being a world leader in mobile networks. "Just two years since we were behind every developed market from the US to Japan, we’ve invested in innovation, driven competition and given people in London a mobile network that’s faster than almost any other in the world, and even faster than most fibre broadband available here. “We’re delighted to be able to exclusively offer our business and consumer customers on EE plans the fastest speeds available in the UK. We’re now the largest 4G network in Europe, but it doesn’t stop here. We’ll keep investing to make sure that all our customers can get access to the great mobile technology that can make a real difference to the way they live their digital lives. EE also revealed that it has hit the six million 4G customer mark ahead of its end-of-year target. The operator also announced that its 4G network is now available in 19 more towns across the UK, taking it to the 300 mark. These 19 new places to get EE 4G are: Alexandria (Scotland), Banbury, Biggleswade, Blaydon, Catterick Garrison, Cookstown (Northern Ireland), Garforth, Greenock, Holmfirth, Limavady (Northern Ireland), Maltby, Oxted, Penicuik (Scotland), Tring, Waltham Cross, Warminster, Warwick, Winterbourne, and Ystrad Mynach (Wales).
