Customs intercepts 54 containerised vehicles in Lagos

THE Tin Can Island command, Lagos, of the Nigeria Customs Service has intercepted 27 containerised vehicles falsely declared by importers.

The intercepted 40-footer containers, brought in from South Korea, contained 54 brand new  vehicles which were falsely declared as used ones by the importer (names withheld) in a bid to evade payment of appropriate duties.

Unveiling the impounded cargo at the Tin Can Island Container Terminal, the Area comptroller of the command, Comptroller David Agbaje,  warned dubious importers to steer clear of the  command as they would not be spared from the fury of the law.

Giving an insight into the landmark seizure, the Customs chief revealed that the dubious act of the importer was discovered by the eagle-eyed officers of the command during the physical examination of the containers.

Comptroller Agbaje further stated that the vehicles, Korea products, were declared as used vehicles in bid to cheat the Federal Government of the accruable and appropriate duties.

“But on physical examination, it was discovered that these vehicles were brand new ones as they have not covered more than 20 kilometres. By implications, it means that the vehicles, after manufacture, were driven straight from the factory to the vessel which conveyed them to Nigeria,” the Customs chief said.

In addition, Agbaje revealed that two of the 27 containers were stuffed full of contraband  products.

According to him, one of them, all 40-footer containers, contain toiletries and Television sets but they were declared as  new refrigerators.

The other container has furniture items, but dubiously declared as used spare parts.

He bought 27 car off the lot, when a tittle is issued to first owner its new.If he is going to resell it will be sold as used because he cannot represent the manufacturer in giving out warranty given to first owner. If he was an approved dealer then that is another issue.

An unbelievable example that got to the supreme court was the charge between Globe motors and Honda place that only one of them is authorised to sell Honda in Nigeria. Both are not even affiliated to Honda going by information on Honda's global site so anycar they sell is legally used only Honda Mfg Nig. is recognised.

I keep saying all these 'new' cars are used because if there is a recall tomorrow their owners are not on Honda's database as owner of used car. Bulletin will be mailed to the original buyer. All those who bought 2008 Accord can't take take it to globe motors to recalled item serviced for free as it should be.

Toyota has dealers recognised listed on their site

Hyundai site doesn't list Nigeria as country with its representative.

If the shipper has personal effect/furniture with their used car, duty on used car is paid, furniture is free(personal effect as long as he can used them in his house.Having 10 TV sets in a container with other goods is shipping not importation because quantity is small enough for individual consumption. His main crime was not paying off some blackmailing crooks who then decide to twist the picture to make shipper look like a criminal.

If you ship a container with cars, minor electronics is not listed on BOL because they are insignificant fillers which could be gift for family members. Those quantities are not big enough to affect the economy.

Buying 387 cars for N2.3b now those are crooks worth going after!

There was a time not long ago Nigerians were capable of doing this, but now with their mentality, they have destroyed everything, some of us saw this coming a long time ago, but greed made our system blind to the start of failure.
