GOLDEN GAFFE Blatter claimed this week that awarding the
World Cup Golden Ball to Lionel Messi was a mistake and
said Germany goalkeeper Manuel Neuer deserved the award
instead. Madrid coach Carlo Ancelotti, believing he was
talking about the Ballon d’Or, said the Fifa president "never
shuts up", although the Italian later apologised for his
remarks.

BORE DRAWS in 2004, Blatter suggested that draws should be abolished. "Every game should have a winner,” he said. “When you play cards or any other game, there's always a winner and a loser. We should have the courage to introduce a final decision in every game of football.” The changes were never ratified by Fifa.

RONALDO A ‘SLAVE’ blatter hit out at the nature of transfers in 2008 after Manchester United refused to sell Cristiano ronaldo to Real Madrid: "I think in football there is too much
modern slavery in transferring players or buying players here
and there, and putting them somewhere [else]." He later
apologised.

QUEER THEORY | When asked about potential problems at the
2022 World Cup in Qatar, where homosexuality is illegal,
Blatter replied: "I'd say they [gay fans] should refrain from
any sexual activities." Widespread outrage - from both within
and outside of Qatar - soon followed.

LATIN LOVER | John Terry was stripped of the England
captaincy in 2010 after stories alleging he had a long-term
affair with the ex-partner of former Chelsea team-mate Wayne
Bridge. "Listen, this is a special approach in the Anglo-Saxon
countries," Blatter said. "If this had happened in, let's say,
Latin countries then I think he would have been applauded."

RACE ROW | In 2011, amid the dispute between Luis Suarez
and Patrice Evra, Blatter claimed that "there is no racism" in
football, and called for players to settle altercations with a
handshake. "We are in a game, and at the end of the game,
we shake hands, and this can happen, because we have
worked so hard against racism and discrimination," he said.

COMMANDER CR7 | In an address to the Oxford Union in
2013, Blatter was asked whether he preferred Lionel Messi or
Cristiano Ronaldo. "One of them has more expenses for the
hairdresser than the other," he said of the Portuguese, who he
also called a "commander" on the pitch. And he added:
"Messi is still my favourite."
